One example would be Fallout 2 or Fable. There''s an overall general story with a wide selection of smaller story arcs contained within. Depending on the player''s choices and actions they encounter different experiences and stories. So, everyone ends up in the same place (allowing the benefits to be had from a linear story) as well as having had a unique, choice-driven experience.
Is this what you meant? Maybe I misread your post, I''ll re-read it.

I see storytelling more the issue than story. I''ve worked on a lot of games that has a great story, on paper, but the game itself falls flat on telling the story. A good story can be told without dialog (thus understood by anyone), then almost any dialog can be placed of the story, and, in some way, it''ll make sense.
