Fedora
That''s pretty much how I understood it too... For now, it''s just the larger packages that have binaries already compiled.
I just thought of something... how soon do you need fedora installed? Fedora Core 2 will be released around May 10th if you wanted to wait a month for it.

I could wait, but if I can just get it upgraded whenever, it''s no big deal.
On a side note, I had never thought of simply making a separate /home partition that way it''s really easy to do a clean install without having to format each time... But someone mentioned to me that he does that, and I kinda slapped my forehead. So simple, and such a damn good idea...
Not that that has anything to do with, well, anything.

I know you said you don''t want to install Mandrake, but I''ve been running version 10 (the final is due in May) and it really is brilliant in my opinion. The defaults look great, it runs smoothly and the package management is a doddle. You can apply updates through a GUI, or use the command line (set it as a cron job for automatic updates). The admin tools do everything for you as well so its a much better desktop system to actually get work done on. The packages are also very up-to-date and upgrading to KDE 3.2 is well worth it if you use 3.1.
