Any game Developers got an Rpg I could download?
I love RPG''s. I don''t know why, but I like crappy 2d ones developed by amateur programmers the best. Does anyone have one that I can download?

I find this funny, it seems like 1 out of every 3 posts is about RPG development, yet it seems like few have actually made one. I can''t really talk, cuz I''ve never made an RPG, but you''d think lots of people would looking at the size of the RPG posts (There always the longest). Anywayz, I just thought some other people would find that funny.

Just so you know, that anon post was from me. I thought it was comic genius at the time, but I don''t see anybody laughing.
Allegro.cc is a good place to look, although all the games use allegro (obvious, isn''t it?) and most of them are for DOS.

Yeah, I noticed the same thing... (lots of RPG plans, few results).. it''s because games are very easy to start... but a lot of games are really hard to finish all the way. Especially RPG games. Taken at face value, most people might think that RPG''s are just as easy to make as another game -- once you have a tile-based map creator, and some kind of scripting system to allow for dialogue and event creation, the rest should be easy, right?
Even the map-maker and scripting system might seem easy to start with, right? After that, it''s all storyline... and everyone has a lot of ideas for storyline.
Now don''t get me wrong, I''ve made the same mistake myself... when I was younger, I had plenty of plans for an exciting RPG.. but there''s just SO MUCH DETAIL that you have to think about. Of course, it''s this detail that makes the RPG good, but when you''re putting the detail into the game, you either end up with more bugs than you can feasibly tackle, or you start to lose interest before the game is over. Especially with small teams. None of my RPGs were ever more than halfway finished.
Extreme congratulations go out to all those that get a finished product out the door... especially if there''s just as much detail put into it at the end as there was in the beginning.
I think the reason this thread isn''t being swamped by posters about their RPG is that most of them are so embarassed that they never got their game finished. Finishing a game is so much fun, don''t make your first game an RPG -- it''ll never get finished, and you''ll end up being disappointed. Or at least, that''s how it went for me. Fortunately, I didn''t give up, and went on to publish a few games when I worked for a game company. I still write games, but I''m not tackling another RPG until I have a full-time job doing it, and I''m working with enough other talented individuals who have put enough of their own games out.
I share your desire for "crappy" 2D RPG''s by amateur programmers... if anyone wants to show off what they''ve done (even if it''s not finished) I''d be happy to see it...
Maybe the title isn''t bringing enough people who have put out their own RPGs...

Greenspun's Tenth Rule of Programming: "Any sufficiently complicated C or Fortran program contains an ad-hoc, informally-specified bug-ridden slow implementation of half of Common Lisp."
Way back when I started to learn about game programming I decided to learn C in Dos working on a tile-based RPG. The hardest part for me was making all those tiles. I know it might sound odd, but a lot of the other stuff was easy, but those damn tiles, hundreds and hundreds of tiles which had to fit together seamlessly... for a beginner it really took a lot of time.
Now I just do everything in 3D and stay the hell away from those tiles.

Crappy 2D RPG''s? Well, I suppose I fit in that category...
My rpg is called Realm of Arcanum. It is, of course, unfinished. However, the engine itself is complete - combat, magic, inventory, stores, inns, saving/loading, character creation, and so on. I will be releasing a new demo in the next week or two to show off all these new engine features.
Chances are, when(i.e. if) RoA is finished, I won''t do another RPG for a long, long time. I think they have a longer devel./design time than most other game genres. void* is right - it seems easy when you start...but then you begin to realize just how much there is to it.

Go to download.com or softseek.com and do a search for a game called "Exile III" or maybe just Exile. For a "crappy" (non-published by a big rich company, shareware distributed) RPG it''s VERY good. The graphics are... well, lame (I could do better with a little work), the game itself is VERY complex. Moreso I think than any commercial RPG I''ve seen... at least that''s the impression I got from it.
Don''t let the ugly character graphics turn you off right away, it''s a fun game, trust me.

READ ME FOR CRAPPY 2D RPGs!!!!!!!!
Well, not only have I made a few of my own (elementary school projects in QBasic) but a year ago I started an awesome program called RealmsDS that would let you create your own crappy 2D RPGs! How crappy? Square-tiled-turn-based-combat-soundblaster-midi-64x64-map/npc/character/monster/weapon/item/spell/dialogue/event-editor
all in screen mode 13h, presented in CRAP-O-VISION! And YOU, sir, have inspired me to pull my thumb out and finish it.
