RPG Based on a slightly different idea - Part 2
Kylotan has the nasty habit of closing threads before they''ve been milked of all their potential.
ShadowWolf:
Once you get the sphere system working to your satisfaction, you might consider complicating it by having different spheres/combinations yield different effects for different types of characters. I''m thinking races, but you could just as easily do it with professions. Alternately (or additionally), you can give each character an "element of focus" for which they receive bonuses.
Let''s say red stems from fire, yellow stems from earth, and blue stems from water. Characters of fire would get higher bonuses from red spheres and lower bonuses (or even pentalties) from blue spheres. When you factor this into your formula, it makes for an incredibly diverse system: do I want to mix the blue sphere with three reds to get +5 str / -2 int, or do I want to use a yellow one instead to get +3 str / +1 attack? It''s a matter of how badly you want those extra two points of str.
I like the idea, by the way. I''ve been thinking of how I could use an item-based system for a simple RPG. This is after having played Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, which is more like Zelda than any FF. (Strangely enough, most the people I talk to actually like it better that way.)
GDNet+. It's only $5 a month. You know you want it.
I''ll let this slide for now. But generally when a thread is closed such as was this thread''s parent, the discussion is over. That thread was not closed for Kylotan''s personal jollies, it was turning into flames. Re-posting closed threads is a great way to sass the mods and otherwise earn yourself a bit of bad attention.

Well, I would like to explore the Sphere System a bit more. I'm going to design an "official" document for it so that others can use it without having to work at it. I think it's a good system from which many CRPGs can be easily created.
I don't much like the racial idea, it takes away from the spirit of the system. The only thing I would use races for is simply to alter beginning stats and skills, but not Sphere affinity.
The elemental thing is pretty cool. I think using the elemental of focus idea is cool though. In this manner, a character could start at elemental focus 0 and through the use of Spheres, they could alter that. Like, using spheres whose primary attribute is fire (red) would move your affinity towards fire.
In this manner, a character could gain bonuses towards certain Spheres and negatives towards others. I will always keep combinations on a logical, predictable scale so there will be no "surprise" combinations; however, some results will be different than one might expect because of the way things work together. For example, having your Primary Sphere being Red and a helper Sphere of Blue produces a totally different result than a Primary Red and a regular Blue. I'm still not sure about all that though, I'm definitely working on it though!
[edit: Sorry if you didn't want me to post this. I just noticed the mod's response. :-) Hopefully we can avoid any flame wars!]

Please, feel free to provide examples if you''re going to claim such things. The thread in question had yielded nothing but personal attacks for 5 days before I closed it. I don''t mind you carrying on the legitimate side of the discussion here, but I resent somehow being blamed for the stupidity of others. My job here is to enforce the rules and one of those is that "Insults and personal attacks on other members will not be tolerated. You are free to disagree and argue with someone else, but insults are where we draw the line." There were insults; I drew the line.
