but i wish they showed change based on time, not game events

you can''t penalize the player just because s/he''s been too quick at playing the game and therefore the character isn''t powerful enough to progress to the next game event

You could also use a Circle of life idea. Or the Nirvana idea... Basically, the player is lowered in status (or race) if they do bad stuff and die, and lifted in life if they do good stuff and die... I thought about implementing this, but I have been busy lately with the Learning Experience instead

Interesting... This aligns with our players becoming monsters when performing *bad* deeds (see the "More on Players as Monsters" thread for some details). I may pitch this to the team!

I think time should be a factor in gaming. If you could start your character as a child and allow them to do different things that would determine what kind of skills they would have in the future. As a child, strength is not going to make much difference, but they could choose to learn how to do different things. They may learn the art of swordplay or how to theive or the ability to notice things. At least this would give the player a background into their character as well (ie, not really a task for us Game Designers to put a background story in ). The child grows older, and at the players choice can go off to seek wealth or glory.

There would have to be a lot of fun stuff to do in the childhood though, because otherwise it would be crap, and nobody would want to do it . This is getting back to that "child scene" in the game that someone suggested to give the character attributes. That was only a scene though, and time didn''t have any concequence on the games mentioned there .

Time would be interesting for an sim where you control a party. You would be like the god (god-games ) and could make decisions for your party, and when they geet too feeble, you can get some new members. This could give you the ability to recruit fresh young warriors to your group, but would mean that there are some who lack experience.

Just a rant

This is how age was implemented in Sojourn (MUD that EQ is a ripoff of). With age players recieved a few bonus hitpoints, the aging bonus would decline as players became old. There never was any permanent death due to age, thank god. This is a silly idea, and will not attract players. Some mobs such as wraiths casted aging spells, that in one second could age a player tremendously. Necromancers (player class) were able to cast spells that made a player younger.
I just lost a really long post to this... damn reset feilds button!

Anyway... (shortened version) Just make it an everlasting lifetime or a very looooong lifetime (ie, Macros the Black from Feist, or Nevyn from Katherine Kerr). They age and feel the pang of aging, but they still live.

Now that''s an interesting idea Dak. This would allow you to make a new character physically but maintain their knowledge and experience. Very interesting.

I love Game Design and it loves me back.

Our Goal is "Fun"!
Ooooh... you mean like D.... (I can''t remember his name) the Mentat from Dune. He was continuosly regrown by the Ixians for Leto II. D...? Dh...? Du...? what is his name? I can''t remember, I read those books when I was 12 .. Was it Duncan? I don''t think so
