I think what was happening to you originally was two things:
you didn''t have depth-testing enabled & the 2nd face drawn was always on top &... you might not have had front-&-back facing polygons enabled... so the 2nd face that was drawn... looked terrible because you were seeing the backside of all the polygons. Pair these 2 problems with various light settings & material settins for your vertices... & you can see all sorts of weird stuff.
