smooth scrolling question......

whats the theory behind the smooth side scrolling in non-tiled based maps?How is it done?
Well.. if you mean a map that is one big bitmap instead of an array of tiles, then all you have to do is blit the rectangle that you want out of the bitmap. Just clip it to the screen edges..

I dont know if that''s what you meant though.

The best way is to setup a giant playfield and use hardware registers to scroll the map. However, I don''t think this works on all new cards...that is unless you use EGA mode.

Ah, it was SO easy to get an Amiga hardware scrolling map two playfields deep at 60 fps. I sure miss that computer!

you create an array. you test the array and blit a bitmap to a larger bitmap in accordance to this array. then you blit the large bitmap to the screen. look at my side-scrolling demo on my homepage. the direct link should be www.polarisoft.n3.net/cave.zip
