On more than a few occations certain headers have had special requirements like my string utils will require . Is it bad practice to include the required headers in these locations?

If the header files you are including are not part of the ANSI standard then you shouldn''t include them if you want to be portable. There are of course exceptions, but your best bet is to stick to ANSI standard.
