Sounds like my dad, only he''s a little vague on what it should be. I had a conversation like this with him not to long ago.

Him-"You know what would you should make, a movie that''s a game. It''s like a movie, only it''s a game"

Me-"Geez dad, companies tried those a few years ago, they sucked horribly"

Him-"No,no, Its like a game, only its a movie"

Me-"First, I don''t know any actors, second, i don''t know writers, and third i don''t have a budget. Your whole idea is an ill-concieved nightmare with no hope of getting off the ground."

Him-"I''m sure you could get it to work"

The only thing worse than a father''s lack of anything that resembles a clue is their faith in your abilities.

With my father, he has no clue about what it takes to make a game nor does he have much faith in my abilities. Two negatives.

Need help? Well, go FAQ yourself. "Just don't look at the hole." -- Unspoken_Magi

At least your dad encourages you to spend that much time on a computer. Consider yourself lucky because of that!!

My honest opinion is that you should smack your dad right upside his damn head. He sounds like a wanker. Tell him to do real dad things like go to strip clubs and gamble...not program.

Refering to a previous message, I would like to say Mankind IS NOT LIKE STARCRAFT! And whats more it is slow as anything. Sure it is space-based, ya know, lotsa spaceships(wow!), but it doesn''t resemble an RTS in the slightest.

Making a game that is a cross between Starcraft and half-life would be simply dull. Not to mention as was mentioned before, servers. Thousands of quad-processor servers each running at a clock speed of 1GHz would do though. And, in the ideal world where every single person on the planet has a computer with a RISC processor running at 4GHz, with 10Gbs of RAM and 5Tb HDD, not to mention the 1Gb Voodoo49s.

Sorry, but your Dad will have to settle for either of the two. And please, please don''t let him destroy our beloved Starcraft.

Your dad wants it 3d and like Starcraft? Why? I''ve never seen a 3d map building game. Does your dad actually want it to be a map building game?

Actually, WarCraft 3 is all in 3D. I suppose that it doesn''t use maps but rather it uses worlds. Not sure though about that part..

why don''t you make it a real-time e-mail game
that would make it fun
and then send each frame of FMV to the clients by post
one every week or something
and you could make bog roll retail a major feature of the RTS
that way you could make money from playing the game

It is clear that one computer can''t do the job. But what do you think of the next idee?

Every player ( = computer) added in the game pool brings its processing power, memory capacity and other resources with it. In theory, adding all this power and resources ( 200 computers and Terabytes of memory) should be able to do what your dad asks. I''m thinking of a kind of distrubuted system, where each computer is responsible for the management of a part of the total environment. More precise, each computer only deals with the information direcly needed for the local player on this system. If new information is needed (what is behind the horizon?), a demand is broadcasted into the game pool, and the computers that have relevant information anwer to this request. Every computer added to the game pool enlarges the enrichment and complexity of the game. The tricky part is ofcoarse the information interchange between all computers.

In fact, this is an idea i''m working, but did not get past the terrain rendering stage for the moment.
Jeez, your lucky your dad has faith in you. My dad barely speaks to me, or even replies to my emails. And it isn''t like we''re not on speaking terms, but he believes that he shouldn''t be overbearing, he would like for me to be able to make my own decisions. HA! The only time I ever heard "congratulations" or "I''m proud of you" were at exactly the same time... about a minute after I told him he never said that... and a minute later my mum decided that she was guilty for never having said it! Now I hear it too much for it to be believable. Just like the "I love you" trip my mum gives me every time she rings. I say you have a COOL dad, why not get him involved in your project too... I''m sure it is more fun than fishing, which was a poor attempt of bonding by me and my dad.

I think I have bared my soul (still not sure if I have one ) enough for this rant...

PS. The idea is Feasable... for about 200 years in the future!

I am thinking that it might be possible to make a map game with 3D. you just need to make your tiles 3D objects and then based on your map, give them an offset. It isn''t that dissimilar(sp?) from the object offsetting in Qx and any other 3D game. Seems quite possible if you ask me... I don''t know about the number of players though or w/o 3D acc. (actually, I do... big fat NO! ).
