We are making games, not reality simulators
No one ever says "OMG i wont play chess the knight doesn''t look realistic at all!".
Discuss.
The ratio of people saying "OMG I want to play chess" these days is very small, if you haven''t noticed already.

Yeah, but its still nice to play with a really cool looking chess set. ![](tongue.gif)
Anyway, i think that some kinds of gameplay can be improved by realism, specifically in games that are based on reality. A game like chess is an exception because it isnt trying to simulate reality. A FPS on the other can get entertainment from immersing a player in a real life situation. so, the better the immersion, the better the game. well, maybe something to think about.

"Games" is one form of "Entertainment." Just because some more life-like-looking pumped-up combat simulators are on the "games" shelf at Target doesn''t mean they necessarily have more to do with "Checkers" than with, say, "Saving Private Ryan."
enum Bool { True, False, FileNotFound };
It is important to distinguish between games and simulations.
Chess simulation, like other simulation, requires realistic rules, controls, and yes, graphics.
Games usually aren''t important enough for these things to matter.
blah blah blah.

Reality is boring. Nobody wants to simulate reality and make it a game.
But fantasy is based on reality, it''s reality with a few tweaks. A world that is very close to our own but slightly different is very compelling, whereas one that is totally unrecognizable makes it harder to draw the player in. My mother, for instance, will never learn Chess because it''s too abstract.
While an older generation (my grandparents) had to occasionally use their imaginations to play such abstract games, the younger generations spend much more time in front of a screen and require more intuitive, detailed and elaborate games.
That''s my opinion, anyway. I enjoy hearing others.

Ouch.

That was a MUCH better post than most AP''s, at least he contributed and didn''t go on an off-topic rant, I actually found his post on par with everyone elses so far, so please don''t mock an AP that actually gives as good input as anyone else has.
Anyways, if there are 2 chess games, one looks realistic and one looks like crap, both have equal play, which would you prefer? On another note, there was a fun chess game I used to play that had the chess pieces actually kill each other (animated), was pretty cool to watch, even though it wasn''t realistic. Fun doesn''t mean realistic, and realistic doesn''t mean fun, however, there are times that realistic makes the most sense. If you''re trying to get the player to associate real life with what''s going on in the game, then the more realistic looking/acting the scene is, the easier it will be for the player to put himself in the game, if your intentions have nothing to do with reality, then you shouldn''t make the scene''s realistic.
