RPG Idea Creation
Since there is so much discussion about rpgs and everyone seems to know about what would make them better, I thought it would be neat for everyone to put fourth their ideas and we could collate them into the ultimate RPG idea.
Here are some general areas (please add more if you have ideas for them)
Combat System
Skill/Experience system
Enviroment Interaction
Rewards System
Quest System
NPC Interaction
MOB AI
Experience System
Economic System
Party Roles
PvP
For starters I think Ideally it would be an MMPORG
And would Combine the Interactive Fighting of Virtual Fighter 4 with out all the fancy button pushing and I really like the skill system used in Diablo 1.10 although Im not totally sold on it
Here's a few more...
Astronomical system
- Planetary rotation, length of day/night
- Day/night effects (light, temperature, etc)
- Moon orbits, eclipses
- Cometary and planetary orbits
- Periodic meteor showers, meteorite collisions
Weather system
- Climate and effects on creatures/plants
- Storms/quakes/eruptions/fires and other natural disasters
- Clouds, haze, fog, smog, etc effects
- Mirage/illusions
- Unnatural phenomena
Movement
- Ground based (creep, crawl, roll, walk, jog, sprint, leap, etc)
- Aerial based (hover, glide, dive, etc)
- Vehicles/mounts (wheeled, legged, winged, trailers/trains)
- Magical/Technological (gating, warping, rifting, etc)
Perception
- Vision (Infra, Ultra, Normal, etc)
- Detection (traps, scents, sounds, tracks, aura, faction, etc)
- Verbal Communication (whisper, speak, shout, page, etc)
- Nonverbal communication (emotes, pheromones, psychic, etc)
Ecological system
Edit: Oh and I'm not sure about ideal being MMORPG... I think multiplayer is ideal, but probably a group of the same friends meeting online to advance through a series of adventures. Being able to pick up where you left off is nice and MMORPGs tend to go on without you.

You said ideally it would be an MMORPG, but can you program an MMORPG, or are you aspiring too high? By asking for so many opinions, it makes you sound like you can''t come up with anything on your own, which isn''t something you want people to think.
I''m not planning on making this game at all. I thought it would be an interesting thought experiment to see all the features that people would come up with and what do I care what people think of my game design skills?
i always thought it would be neat if you could burn stuff down. i don''t mean lighting a single bush on fire, and having it burn for a bit, and then reverting back to normal state. i mean, lighting a forest fire (or a village fire) and watching the whole thing burn to the ground.
of course nobody should do this... but it would be neat if you could.

Why don''t you burn down the school, Trash?

reply to 5010 :
Some of the detail there like different time lengths for night and day seem like they wouldnt add a lot of immersion to me or would loose there luster very quickly. That being said
Love the Idea of random weather events
New Category
Environment
Again right on with different types of movement and different perception types although I see these being integrated with the combat system
Combat System
Skill/Experience system
Enviroment
Enviroment Interaction
Rewards System
Quest System
NPC Interaction
MOB AI
Experience System
Economic System
Party Roles
PvP
Too lazy right now to categorize the suggestions. Ill do it soon

Thanks for your insight into your pyromaniacal fantasies.
thanks for yet another useless post in this thread. do you have any more negativity to spew on people who actually want to discuss game design, or did you grow up yet?

Why don't you burn down the school, Trash?
why don't you STFU, and go back to the lounge where you belong?
anyway, asshole comments aside, it would have some interesting implications for gameplay. one could conceivably torch the guardhouse, leaving a village defenseless. one could burn down a rival guild's fortress. one could start a forest fire, and loot the nearby village while everyone is trying to stop the fire.
one could also start a camp fire (for warmth+5, light+5, and using the cooking skill on a recently killed were-deer), and accidentally start a fire in the grove.

I completely agree. In fact, a large scale fire could become an integral part of an epic story.

I think it would add a lot both in sci-fi and fantasy where multiple worlds are involved. Imagine traveling to a slow world where days are long and become extremely hot and nights get extremely cold. Imagine a quick world where the suns, moons, and stars rotate across the sky every 20 minutes or so, casting shifting shadows that obscure and reveal different aspects of the landscape as you travel. What strange creatures inhabit these worlds?
