As I recall Blizzard used illustrators based in Russia for some Warcraft game that never hit the market and was abandoned.

I don''t develop any software right now, but I did a couple of years ago and my experience in any business is that meeting people face to face always has a large impact than e-mailing and chatting.

However of course if the communications is well done and everybody is working hard it might work anyway.
