dynamic IP question
hi,
I am using dynamic IP ADSL at home. I plan to use the connection to host a game server. I know there are some dynamic DNS services that enable my dynamic IP to map to a fixed domain name and the client can use the domain name to connect to my server.
My questions are:
Q1. If I do not close the ADSL connection, will the IP assigned to me remain the same forever, or will it be changed after the IP lease time?
Q2. Suppose some clients have connected to my server using the domain name. If the dynamic IP changes after some time and the change is reflected in the DNS immediately, will the clients be disconnected from my server?
Thanks.

I too have a server at home with a cable modem that uses a dynamic IP address. I use a dynamic service (dyndns.org) to find the computer when the IP address changes. I don''t host a game, but I do have a web server and SSH server, so I have the same issues.
If you have people attached to the game when the lease runs out or the ISP just decides to update your IP address, the people will get kicked out of your game. When the lease runs out, there is no guarantee that the IP will change or stay the same. I use a Linksys router so it stays on all the time. The IP will stay the same for days even though the lease is only four hours.
When the IP address changes and you update a dynamic service, it will take time for the DNS entry to propage through the system. It could take hours. The people doing the dynamic DNS service can tell you how long it will take. During this time, people will not be able to get to your serve because the domain name you use will still be pointing to the old IP address.
