Graphics too good to focus?

I was talking to a friend that told me that he didn''t liked much Super Smash Bros. Melee, however he loved the one in N64. I asked why and he said, "The graphics were too good. I couldn''t focus on the fight I got distracted by the pretty background all the time". Do you think that sometimes cool graphics are bad for the game? Is obvious that games today require certain minimun of quality in graphics but, is there a maximum?
I''ve seen things like this.. Like when companies make games 3D just because 3D is "cooler".. There are alot of games that I beleive could have been 2D and they would have been easier to make things out.. Personally I find that most 3D games have a fuzzy look to them which makes it harder to see certain things.

I would also say that the background of a super fast fighting game like Super Smash Brothers needs to be simple so that you can see the Characters.. you gotta keep the focus on whats important and I think things need to be easy to see and understand what they are

This is true but I guess they did it intentionally to give more challenge. Although I prefer they wouldn''t do that. That why I likes static stages more.

But more info on this could be taken from analizing the constrasts of the background vs. the characters. Just my opinions.
I''ll just say that I never had that problem... But I do zone out when playing certain games like that, but I still win (guess it''s just reflexes?). I guess there could be a problem like the one you''re talking about... but I don''t think making the graphics worse when they can be better is the answer...

Uberness...

Actually I haven''t had *much* problems with that but, I know that I don''t pay much attention to the details like those. All I see is the in the characters is the basic colors and their form, like I know I''m the green guy(Link ) and the other one is a pink ball, I pay attention to the movement and when the two figures touch. If something that doesn''t comes from the two figures moves in the world, I focus for a sec on it to check what it is.

The world that I see it''s just platforms and walls. Walls have different ''sliding chance'' to call it someway (that means if a floor is irregular, it''s easy from the highest part to the lower, and is harder to move from a lower part to a higher one), and the walls also have a Yes/No grappling value (as if I can grab with Link''s hookshot).

That''s how I see the game when I''m playing, strange isn''t it? How ever if I see myself getting beaten I get out of it and just think why I''m getting my ass kicked and how to get out of it. Like when my bro plays as Shiek, he just keeps doing 3 things but since Shiek moves so fast and Link isn''t that quick one mistake makes me loses so easily and when I think so fast I make many so I find myself often when playing against him making lots of them.

Dang. This long post about stupid game stuff must be boring to read. Well, the freaking point is that I guess the way the player see the game influences the gameplay greatly. I don''t focus much on graphics but my friend does so I guess that was too good for him
i''m doing actually some study on video games, actually a lot of peaople seems to think that video games is related to reflexe, it''s half true, reflexe won''t help you "read" the game, it''s more about perception which is when the player tend to abstarct thing of the game, he did not "see" he perceive them, just like a chess player could read many move, a game video player could see the "flow" of the game in advence and get the best move (grow with training)
people who are confortable didn''t see anymore "crappy alien coming , oh dude!" but unit X {force:xxx;speed:xx;movement type:xx} which is an abstraction of game many player did see only pattern and could turn off mentally the graphic
graphic is important for the training by helping read the whole and create pattern easily
good player is nothing but pattern reader this help us to use with more efficienty their reflexe even the one in front of us had more reflexe, they can cornered them to mistake
it''s the play style of my bro o use very little but higly efficient move

the whole study was made on people playing quake 3 with 60fps
i was so impress to see that in 1/10e s they make a complete turn while jumping to see a panorama of the scene and after aim instantly to kill people in one shoot with the railgun
this mean they could analyze the situation with only 6 image (1/10e s at 60fps) and record the area to aim at
their is no graphic here it''s all perception

for myself, smash bros mele was confusing at the beginning, their is so many things that could happen in one screen
but now i just did not care and i can dodge no matter how full the screen is

then that COZ says it''s that weird it''s actually common
and it''s not specific to game but it''s a property of the brain
