Which is why in practice it doesn't work trying to sell software under the GPL - you can only expect to sell it once, after that there's no reason why the person you sold it to can't resell it for less than what you charged them - and that's why most business models around the GPL consist of selling support/services related to the software, not the software itself.

Actually there are many company's that do sell linux. Suse for one and now Redhat will only produce Redhat advanced server (which isn't cheap). Redhat will stop producing Redhat for desktop(now it's called fedora and is community developped). So you can sell GPL software.(although, as you said before, you pay for support/services)

I''m done! This message is being posted from SuSE9.0! I haven''t installed too many packages yet, though. And this is the infamously horrible Konqueror browser.

Actualy if they didn't offer a free download it would be in violation. You can download all the latest versions of linux from suse to redhat for free. It's the great thing about linux. So feel free to download from their ftp servers.

Actually, nothing in the GPL states that you can't sell the software. If you want information about the GPL, go read the license on the GNU web site. It's availlable for free.
