Will kids in the future find games a waste of time?
Games now serve no purpose to many since they don''t accomplish much since some are not meaningful. If kids in the future become more educated and civilized will they think that games now are a joke and silly?
If you tell an educated kid in the future to play GTA3 and to kill someone in the game wouldn''t they find it disturbing and meaningless to drop it?
Even the kids at the EGM article that played pong found it better to go outside than to stay in and play the games which many did stay in 20 years ago. I met other kids that like their educational games better than the meaningless violent games. The young kids that only play the learning games do better in school it seems, than young kids that play meaningless games.
If their was a law that outlawed meaningless games would most game designers leave the industry since meaningless games are their source of income? If everyone did something meaningful then game companies would hire teachers to work with designers to make games I think but until then, o well.

The same can be said for movies, books, music, and your incoherent forum posts (
), so what''s your point? I don''t think the entertainment industry will fail any time soon...

Whats the point of going outside and playing? Won''t kids get bored with that?
Wont kids find football, basketball, baseball, soccer or even tag meaningless? What''s the point of most sports, you run back and forth, and try to get a ball in a stupid goal, and then repeat, over...and over...and over again. Pretty meaningless really.
Won''t kids grow bored of pretending that thier fingers are guns and playing cops and robbers? Won''t kids grow bored with tag?
Won''t kids get bored with "kick the can"?
Wait...
No... they wont... because they are kids.
If there was a law that outlawed meaningless games... wait, that would be censorship and thats not cool (not to mention unconstutional)
If kids want to learn, they go to school.
If they want to have fun, they play a game.
Don''t go mixing my fun with my work, cause I won''t like it.

So, since some games are not meaningful, all are??

Maybe, but more likely they will be objective and say, "Well, that where civilization was at at that time."

Possibly, it depends on where society is at when the game is played.

This is a perfect example of where they were at 20 years ago compared to today. Games were more new then, and had more attraction for the kids of those days. Today, they are all over. Take it in context.

It''s a free country. They can play what they want, or whatever their parents let them play.

That is too absolute a statement. Who''s in a position to judge what is meaningless or not meaningless? You can''t legislate morality without trampling on the constitution. It isn''t so easy to do what you are saying. Since this industry is growing, I doubt game designers will leave, this is what they do. It''s not that easy to just walk away from what you do.

A lot of instructional designers and teachers are used in this business, as evidenced by the educational titles you referenced earlier. It''s a matter of choice, not force. If it becomes a forced choice, you''d better really be worrying about your rights.

Yes the same can be said for other forms of entertainment. The industries have their ups and down and the game industry almost went out of business after Atari and almost after Nintendo8 bit.

Kids get a physical work out than sit all day with a controller. Kids do have restriction and to let a kid see do anything it wants it not good. Yep it’s a free country but too much freedom hinders on others freedom and beliefs which is why some things messed up. Fun and learning go hand to hand which that's the meaning of games originally. Now the meaning changed since companies can’t come up with good ideas and they know that meaningless things sell. I had an article about this one in the design forum that explained that.

I didn’t say all games are meaningless.
They did outlaw games in Europe once for some reason or another and they brought it back after clarifying something. You trample on others freedom when you let other thing happen. Some people change jobs and yeah designers sometimes don't leave and stay in and keep making bad games and don't let other fresh ideas come out sometimes.
Educational games are not as widely made as non educational. And just because someone has a choice doesn’t mean it’s always right. Kids are forced to go to school does that mean their rights are hindered? TV is forced to have a certain amount of educational shows; people are forced by threats of jail time if they don't follow the law.
Freedom for one person doesn’t mean its true freedom. If I have the freedom to get drink it doesn’t mean I am free but a slave to my addiction that can hurt me and people around me.
A barbarians values of freedom takes away the freedom of a civilized person.

I find them a waste of time, as do my friends and girlfriend, yet we all still play them (well the good ones).
A game is something you PLAY. It''s its definition.
It''s for fun.
so my opinion is that they (or atleast their parents) will still find them a waste of time, but it won''t stop them from playing them.

playing [games] is a basic human need. essentially it keeps you sane and healthy. and that´s purpose enough.
Awwwww crap, I''ve just realised there''s no purpose to anything in life now. Great going :x
...
Ah well, guess it''s the whole "being so superficial" aspect we humans have that makes us enjoy games.

of course nothing will entertain kids of the future, they''ll most definatly lose their sense of imagination because some of the old video games sucked. they will act and think all the same like alien kids, because it''s the future and magically kids are not humans anymore because of the date.
it all makes perfect sense, you''re a GENIOUS!

Games have been around since the beginning of civilization, it is not anything new. All games serve a purpose in one form or another. I think a lot of people neglect the fact that games are not restricted to digital form, they take so many more forms. Boardgames, sports, etc. It is a form of social interaction and self satisfaction. I don''t think those are meaningless reasons to play games. If they put a ban on videogames, they might as well put a ban on sports and boardgames as well, they are all one in the same.
