Can anyone think of a scenario suitable for a MMORPG which does not revolve around combat and still having emjoyable gameplay?
In a p&p RPG you can reduce (and remove as well) the combat by rather playing out the social part of the characters, but in (most?, all?) cRPG''s all character interactions is basicly reduced to bashing each other to death. I actually find it very hard to think of a scenario suited for character interactions that''s possible to make on a computer, especially when it''s a MMO and you''re likely to meet quite a few retarded badgers.

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but Holy Sweet Mother. I was going to post a link to Toontown Online as an example. But they have battles. I can't believe I never checked that out before!
I'm hoping that The Sims Online has no significant battle structure, but I've never played it.
Well, now. Anyone interested in developing a proper children's MMORPG?

Or an ant simulation. Every player plays as an ant in an ant colony and they have to cooperate to survive. Wow, does this sound like fun or what?

This is a bit of a hackaround, but how about a MMORPG which uses breaker-style dance battles in place of combat? The cool thing is that if both teams pull particularly spectacular moves out, there doesn''t have to be a loser at all.

Most of the games mentioned seem to be MMO games, but not RPGs. combat, seems to me, to be one of the most essential parts of an RPG, all those games are more like a giant graphical chat systems.

Depends on how you define RPG. Coming from a pen and paper background, I consider The Sims to meet all of my criteria better than most so-called RPGs.

A friend and I from work were alpha and beta testers for ToonTown Online (and we now get a $20 discount on subscription fees) for two years (up until the release date).
This is a screenshot of our first capture of a cog building.
I think the water pistol was cool, but the really good weapons were the sound weapons. They were awesome to say the least.
