Noes! Linuxant went nazi!
So, I was seriously considering putting Linux on my laptop, actually I was going to do it.
But Linuxant requires you to PAY for their FULL version of the Conexant drivers now! And LOW AND BEHOLD my modem is specifically Conexant.
See, you CAN get a free version, but it limits it to the abilities of a 14.4 modem! WTF?
Anyone have ANY ideas here? I really want Linux on this baby! :''(

Are you certain you have to pay for the source, or just pre-built binaries?

I''ll get back to you on that - but I''m pretty sure.

Nope, only source you can get free is the cut down source.

Take your laptop back to the place you bought it from, and demand them to give your money back.

I got it for free, and it wasn''t a laptop meant for linux. I truly hate software modems.

You got the laptop for free, the operating system for free and now you are complaining that you have to pay for the drivers?
Open source != free software
And paying for sofware is not a bad thing... one day someone paying for software it might put food on the table of a certain solo company called FFE.

Hmmmm...
That''s a good point, but why did you post that Anonymously?

If the drivers were once available for free, try to find the last free version, and use that. Obviously it will be buggier than the current version, but it might still work.
If I remember correctly, it''s illegal to charge for driver software. Since it''s required for your device to work, and it''s understood that you paid for the device, drivers are required.
But after reading the site, and their disclaimer about why they sell the drivers, it''s still bogus. I''d look for the latest free versions. Sure they may be a bit buggy, but what did linux users do before? They made do and they worked well enough to be useful.
