Gentoo o_O
Hi, im looking into installing Gentoo, as I erm... Mandrake by accident. Reading through the documentation though, it seems a bit overly-complicated (so shoot me ). Then I found
GLIS: http://sourceforge.net/projects/glis/
I was wondering if anyone tried this, and did it make it easier to install Gentoo, or not?
I didn''t look at gliss, but i can tell you i installed gentoo a couple of times and it isn''t hard to do. Also, i think it''s a good way to learn. All you have to do to install gentoo is downloading the documentation (and i really suggest printing it) and type all the commands in it while reading the text between each commands. This will make you learn interesting things about linux.
hope that helps

Gentoo is great! I have installed it a few times, my suggestion is to do 4 partitions one for the swap|boot|root|home. Also reiserfs is a great file system for your root directory, and if you already have linux installed make a copy of your XF86Config file and other config files, makes the install process go better.
You will really learn alot about linux doing a gentoo install and the forums are alot of help, I have never used one of the install helpers it hasn''t been that hard to do the install as long as you follow the install guide

Well, thanks you two, ill probably install it this weekend, ill let you know how it goes.
A lot of people think Gentoo is intimidating because you install it through the command line but it''s really not that hard (they walk you through it step by step and there''s lots of stuff to help you). Once you''ve gotten it installed and you''ve learned how to use Portage (the package manager), using Gentoo is far easier than any other distro I''ve tried.
It would probably be worth your time to look up a few command line tutorials before you start and make sure you''re comfortable with that.

Gentoo isn''t too hard to install, especially if you have a second computer nearby you can use to access the internet with.
Follow the instructions exactly as they are and you should be fine, but if you run into trouble go to forums.gentoo.org for some of the best help around or #gentoo on irc.freenode.net is also a good place to look for info.
I don''t know about glis''s current state, but when it''s done it should be very easy to use, and I think it''s probably quite good now.
