Robots and wizards... sounds like Protoss mischief to me

I''d say both. but have it as if the medival times are now future times. so you have all races like hobbits, elves, dwarves but they all experience the future of robotics. All fantasy games / stories / movies have fantasy as ancient before times type setting. why not have them in the future?

both is just stupid

how hard would that b to make

robots would be easier as the modelling would be way easier to do.

and you could easily make every thing generic

btw, ta style sounds good

I think both would be great if you could pull it off. The game would probably seem very forced though. It wouldn''t have a natural flow to it. So I believe the humanoids would be the best option simply because of logistics, especially if it''s one of your first projects.

Gamedev.net is simply the best gamedev site on the net.

I''d have to say Robots.

If you have to have 3 sides, here''s the obvious ones:

Mechas (organic humans driving big robot suits)
Patterns (humans minds put into robotic bodies)
Automatons (robots with artificial intelligence)

The first two are rip-offs of TA (Mechas==ARM, Patterns==CORE), but who cares? If I were you, designing an RTS with 3 sides, I''d have each side focus on certain aspects of combat.

Mechas could be fast and have strong weapons, they focus on covering ground and raiding. They produce units quickly and thus are prepared to lose many units just as quickly. A Mecha player is an aggressive swarmer.

Patterns could be slow and have strong armor. They focus on keeping land, defending bases, and slowly steamrolling enemy bases. Their units are expensive and few, and must be careful with what they have. A Pattern player is a strategic turtler.

Automatons could be stealthy and have the best information gathering methods. They are a variation on the Pattern power balance. Their units are expensive and few, but instead of having heavy armor, they have sneaky ways to avoid direct combat. An Automaton player must be careful and patient, waiting for the perfect time and place to make a crippling strike. This side would have the steepest learning curve.

I think that sounds a lot better than wizards, zombies and elves.
