I had the same problem like you a while back.
I suggest the following programs:
Sibelius 2 - a Notation program. You can make MIDI music with this.
ACID Pro 4 - A looper. You can make techno and ect. with this.
ACID PRO Techno - A techno looper. A bit cheaper than the ACID Pro 4, I think.
You can also try to record your playing, and then editing than in a music program like Cakewalk or something.

There is a magazine published every month about making computer music. They always feature free software on their cd, or at least trial versions to make something. I believe its called Computer Music. I know Barnes and Nobles carries it in my area. NOrmally grouped with the computer programming and computer arts maagazines.

vst is BY FAR AND WIDE the predominant format for instrument and effects plug-ins.. this forum seems to be in complete denial. you can use someone''s proprietary music system and suffer, or you can use vst, which will give you access to tens of thousands of free synths, samplers, and effects plug-ins. investigate.

Are there any free MIDI composers out there?

Sounds like you could use something like Fruity Loops.
www.fruityloops.com
Personally, I hate it - it doesn''t work the way I think - but I can see that it has an extraordinary amount of possibility, power and compatibility.
[The demo piece was quite nice, as I remember it!]
Price to output quality ratio is very very very favourable.
