WILD WEST MMORPG
Think about this, you standing in the middle of the town''s walk, facing another player, holding your special silver handle colt 45 smith n western.
Both of you waiting for the sound of the minute hand to click to the first split second of the hour to see who really is the fastests gun in the west.
I was thinking of an idea of an old WESTERN MMORPG.
The players would have stats like
Speed (Determines the speed of which you can draw)
Aim (Helps your accuracy with the weapon your using)
im sure others could be added into the game, but those are some basic examples.
In the game players should be able to run about and do anything you were able to do in the old Wild West.
Say you wanted to go and get drunk at a bar, you should be able to go and pay for yourself to be drunk, while your vision slowly gets more and more blurry and your walking path would be crooked, depending on how tolerant you are to beer and whiskey.
You should also be able to run about and start grudges with people, like go into any place and start a fist fight or riot.
Players would be able to live the entire experience of the Wild West and even make there own gangs, like the Jesse James gang and such.
You should be able to run your own shops as well, if you can pay the right taxes, or if you just want to travel around the lands going through towns while living battle to battle in the gunslinger tournaments then you could always do that.
For towns there should be at least 10 to 15 different towns you can go into, and to make it where there wouldn''t be any empty ghost towns make the player start off where he wants to when he creates his character.
For example, if he wanted to start in town A, then he could, but every time the player dies they would respawn back to the town they originated from.
This is just a basic sketch idea, but tell me what you think of it please.
Thanks,
Vash

You haven''t thought this out enough really to start a proper discussion. These users have.
Read through that first and see the ammount of work that would need to be done.
If my post sounds mean it isn''t meant to.

In a typical western movie, you have evil versus good. I don''t see that in your plan. You should have a good guy (a sheriff--a lawman) trying to preserve his town from the evil bandit. All I get from your explanation is that you can start a fight with anyone at anytime. I would like to see that you can have the chance for good conquers evil. Another stat would be how many villians were triumphed over.
I was just thinking in a MMORPG not everyone can be the HERO, so maybe a cool Idea would be that only certain people could be Sheriffs and when your the sheriff your going to have the Outlaws out to get you.
So then you got Sheriffs, Outlaws, Probably Blacksmiths or Gunmakers but what else..

Some professions:
Saloon owner
Farmer (get lotsa income, outlaws should steal it from them, sheriff should protect them)
Horse tamer (hey, you need good horses in a western)
A stat that I think is very important is reputation, also horseriding skill could come in handy when chasing. then you get farming skill, beer/whiskey-brewing (Im not sure what the english word is for making whiskey) skill (well this one might just be a saloon-owner only skill. Beer/whiskey could serve for healing purposes)
Then you need traditional stuff like banks to rob, and you need to think of how big the world is, whats in it except cities etc etc there''s so much to think of. You haven''t even covered 1% of what you need to think of. I''d advise you to think about it for a few hours and come up with some more. The more info you have, the more people you will attract towards your ideas...
There are so many MMORPGs, you need really good ideas to come up with something people will like. So think about it, for days and days and days and days...
Then make a new topic about this.

Something like frontier 1849 or is it called diffrently. Thats a mmporpg simmiliar to your idea. Look for it at www.mpogd.com for some help but a really nice idea :D
I suppose it could be cool. but it just doesn''t have the same appeal to me as a fantasy game. I suppose it''s due to growing up playing mostly fanatasy roleplaying games.
You might want to also read this thread on the game mechanics of riding a horse. I actually more fully developed this idea later on, after that thread died.
The basic premise is several scalars for each type of action: one multiplies the rider''s skill with the horse''s skill with the bond between the horse and rider for each skill, and then the resulting value is further enhanced by the horse''s current demeanor at the time, which can be calm, spooked, resentful, vengeful, etc.
For example, Joe, a man, is good at sidepassing. King, a descendant of Steeldust, and a forerunner of the highly regarded Quarter horse breed, is also an excellent sidepasser. However, the bond between Joe and King is only mediocre, based on the limited time Joe has spent with King, combined with Joe''s rough techniques.
Also, at the moment, King is somewhat resentful of Joe, because Joe fed Snickers and Echo carrots, but ran out of carrots before feeding King any. So, today, King is a little bit resentful of Joe, and that isn''t good for Joe getting what he wants from King.
So, Joe''s sidepassing ability = .6
King''s sidepassing ability = .9
The Joe/King bond = .4
King''s resentful factor = .4 (.5 being neutral)
Thus, when Joe initiates a sidepass signal to King, what do we get? .6 x .9 x .4 x .4 = .0864.
Assuming that a baseline average result would be .5 * .5 * .5 * .5 == .0625, we can see that currently the team of Joe and King are going to typically achieve a slightly higher than normal execution with regard to the sidepass maneauver. Obviously, this can improve over time if Joe would practice sidepassing and King would become less resentful of Joe. King is in pretty much top form with regard to his ability for sidepassing, so clearly, the burden lies with Joe for better riding, in this case. As Joe spends more time with King, assuming he treats King well, we can imagine the bond between Joe and King will also improve, which of course, will also have an effect on the overall sidepass, among other maneuvers.

I''ve had discussions on this topic before, and would like to point out this.
The Old West is just a setting for your story. Do not feel the need to stay 100% historically accurate. There are a lot of stories out there that use the Wild West as a back drop, but are not completely westerns. There are horror stories, Native American Legends, and such. I do agree that the main focus of the game should be on the "classic" western, but don''t be afraid to shift focus at some points to other places.

Ideas presented here are free. They are presented for the community to use how they see fit. All I ask is just a thanks if they should be used.
Hmmmm... Didn''t they have a game come out called Wild Arms? Granted, it was an Anime futuristic Western, but it still had a Western feel. I''d like to continue the Old West style RPG, but I think it would look good on console (X-Box) With Morrowind''s configuration. I just like that idea because you can still move your character around and get some of the coolest camera angles for what control you DO have.
Horse riding would be a cool feature, but the implification of it seems like it would be hard because you have to take into account horse tricks and mounted rifle and gunfire that makes the whole experience more like an Old Western.
You could go fantasy western and have a huge island made like the Old West. The trains could be boarded and rode, or highjacked and derailed. Ok, maybe not derailed.
The costumes alone would be a huge undertaking.
