Perhaps one of you guys will be able to answer this simple question. (the maya docs are useless) I want to UV map , say , a cube. Lets say I have a 512^2 texture map. In the UV texture editor, I want to seperate the 6 sides, so I can put them anywhere on the map. there seems to be loads of options like cut UVs, make new UV sets, normalise UVs, sew Uv''s....I am *a little* confused. Can anyone help me here? I dont want to do any complex multi-texturing (yet) , I just want to be able to seperate the faces so I can move them around the map without streching it. thanks in advance for any help i get I probably should stop, My doctor says I have the wrists of an 80-year old
Go to Edit Polygon -> Texture Maps -> Automatic Mapping.

You can play around with the option to give you the desired result.

Or you can do Planar Mapping on each face of the cube.

Or you can just cut UVs.

Many options.
