This is low priority.. I intend to format and replace with a different linux/bsd so mostly this is just a challenge and I''m quite curiours what in tarnation happen and did I keel it or did GNOME or or uh something else ... I''m rather confused.. it DID work, what happened? If nothing else, mayhaps this will be a funny to someone, that would be neat Brief timeline: Given: When I installed Mandrake 8.1 I had a Voodoo5..
  1. well replaced that card with a Gf4 Ti4200 (nice card) (long time ago, currently using the same machine, card is fine in windows)
  2. and installed the new NVIDIA drivers (as root),
  3. started X (startx, as root)
  4. KDE comes up (every thing looks perfect) and remines me I probably should not be messing with a gui as root (paranoid kde )
  5. So I loged out and loged in as my normal user acount....
  6. KDE worked great, a little better than I remembered.
  7. Decided to try (via log out to graphical login screen select GNOME and then log back in; only way I know how to switch what WM X uses) GNOME (primarily what I had been using) and well..
  8. not sure what happened... GNOME mostly loaded I think. I did not have a pannel or easier to say ALL I had was a term window, Gkrell and some desktop icons.
  9. I logged out the hard way (ctrl+alt+f2ed to another term and logged in and shutdown ed.)
    • I could not figure out another way to get out of gnome...
    • tried running the pannel manually but that resulted in a lot of errors and beeps, pannel did not draw correctly and it pannel stopped running.
    • I ran pannel again (to try and read some of the error messags) and something seemed to get confused. Pannel did not go away that time.. Decided to ditch gnome and worry about it later...
  10. when I got back to the grapical login, X no longer worked.
  11. Uppon turing runlevel back to 3 I was able to see what was up with X...
  12. it looks like the driver is not installed properly now or something.
  13. I did try and reinstall the NVIDIA drivers, that did not seem to have any effect, did not seem to change anything from where I sit anyway.
The line "NV: could not open control device /dev/nvidiactl (No such device) " was not present in the log; It was just above the first (EE) line, I.e. NV: could not open control device /dev/nvidiactl (No such device) (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module! I looked and there was a /dev/nvidiactl I.e.: [root@A900 root]# ls -1aF --format=l /dev/nv* crw------- 1 feral root 195, 0 Aug 4 10:37 /dev/nvidia0 crw------- 1 feral root 195, 255 Aug 4 10:37 /dev/nvidiactl Anyway the log: /var/log/XFree86.0.log

Looks like something might be going on with the XF86Config. First i'd try to remove the nvidia drivers and reinstall them again.
Then do the following from the README:
If you already have an XF86Config file working with a different driver (such as the 'nv' or 'vesa' driver), then all you need to do is find the relevant Device section and replace the line:

Driver "nv"
(or Driver "vesa")

with

Driver "nvidia"

In the Module section, make sure you have:

Load "glx"

You should also remove the following lines:

Load "dri"
Load "GLcore"

if they exist.

edit: I need to be more clear sometimes

As root at a console, type "lsmod" (minus quotes, of course).

Look for "nvidia". If no nvidia module is loaded, type "modprobe nvidia"

Depending on your configuration, this might or might not be necessary.
---New infokeeps brain running;must gas up!
With mandrake, it usually is needed to modprobe, although you could also place nvidia in /etc/modules.autoload , so that you don''t have to do that whenever you want to use the X-Window system. Although this is assuming that you have restarted the computer and such since you loaded the NVidia installer, since I think it installs the module after it is loaded. Just place it so that it loads up with the kernel at boot time, that way you don''t have to worry about modprobing the module before using it.
bingo.

When you install the nvidia drivers, it loads the kernel module automatically. When you rebooted, you didn''t have it loaded anymore, and the X driver couldn''t start.

The solution is to merely add ''modprobe nvidia'' into some init script.
this is wierd. The lastest drivers come with an installer which does everything automagically. The only thing you have to do is to edit the xf86config file to add ''nvidia'' in the display section.

Ahh of course!

I did a “lsmod” and nvidia wasn’t listed! So after “modprobe nvidia” (and confirming that nvidia was listed in lsmod) I startx (ed) and fancy that, it worked!

Turns out “/etc/modules.autoload” does not exist on my mandrake system.. but “/etc/modules” does… I’m guessing mandrake thought it best to rename it? shrug
no idea. I’ll have to remember to make a symlink I think

Woot!

Thank you all, very helpful insight!

they aren''t the same files.

create a new .autoload file, and just put nvidia in there, see if it works then.
ooh not the same files eh? ok that makes more sense. I had assumed it was the same file as my /etc/modules had a driver (at least it looked like one) in it already. FWIW the nvidia driver is being loaded by the time I startx (from term) with it placed in the /etc/modules file. Interesting

I added /sbin/modprobe nvidia to /etc/rc.d/rc.local. Of course, that may not exist in Mandrake (I''m running Slackware), so you may have to do a bit of shell scripting in one of your rc files.
