Battle engine..
seriously, is there any battle engine better than that of the Final Fantasy series?? for RPG''s i mean...
if not.. then probably that''s why everyone is trying to implement it into theirs
The Final Fantasy type of engine is good if you want to make an rpg with strategy in the battle. Final Fantasy does it very well cause everyone gets it''s turn and the player can think of what he was to do. Which is very good for rpg, I least that''s my opinion.
But if you want more action, I suggest using a real-time battle system. Like the one in the Ultima serie.

Darkening: The Final Fantasy battle engine (starting with FF2 in US or FF4 Japan) doesn't wait for each player to make a decision -- the enemies keep attacking whenever they can. BTW, if you are looking for a wait-til-my-turn-is-over type game then check out the Breath of Fire series.
And yes, I think Final Fantasy has the best battle engine I've ever seen.

Hey!!!
What Ultima battle engine are you talking about?
Ultima VII had a crappy battle engine. U8''s was even worse.
I won''t even talk about U9, though it had something good: different weapon damages against different kinds of monsters, like a staff doing more damage to a skeleton. But it was a stupid engine nevertheless.
Now, UO was cool. You didn''t have to keep clicking to attack a creature. All you had to do was to double-click once. The rest would be determined by dex, and ar. Of course, you could run away, cast spells etc. Of corse, the latter actions required more clicking.
Have you guys seen Final Fantasy Tactics? Now THAT''s a combat engine. Too strategy for an RPG, but it''s great!

null_pointer: In all Final Fantasy games after FF3 or FF2, I think, you can change the battle system from active mode to wait mode or something like that. I prefer the active mode cause it gives a more dramatic feeling to the fight.
Outworlder: I''m talking about Ultima 7 and up. I don''t know if the previous Ultima had a real-time battle system.

Ultima always had a realtime batle system.
Final Fantasy''s battle engine is cool but I personnally think that one could do better. It''s not because it is square that it is God-Hand made. They are good, very good. But originality is the key.
Programming is: A.The art of debugging a blank sheet of paper (or an empty file).B.A pastime similar to banging one's head against a wall, but with fewer opportunities for reward.C.The most fun you can have with your clothes on (although clothes are not mandatory).

Now I know what I'm made of, and I'm afraid of it...
Darkening: You''re still wrong. When the FF series hit the SNES, they added a Wait selection in the options menu, but that only applies to the item and spell menus -- if you just sit there the monsters will keep attacking you whenever they can.
Poltras: Square invented ATB system way back in 1990 with Final Fantasy 2 (4 in Japan). When did Ultima come out? And Ultima''s battle engine is very different from FF''s battle engine. Can you explain that remark about originality a bit more? Perhaps I am misunderstanding you...

Yeah, I remember playing those really OLD Ultima games on the SNES like Quest of the Avatar, and Exodus. In those old ultima games, each character would have his/her own turn. I don''t know if there were any other games like these, but the thing that was different about these games were that you could walk around the battle scene and in order to attack, you had to move to your enemy target unless you had a projectile weapon.

I've followed FF since the first to the 8.... In fact (poor of me), the only one I haven't finished is the 8... for lack of interest. I know the first 3 ones were turn based, and the third one included a primitive job system improved in the 5 and used in Tactics...
Ultima:
Akalabeth was out before 1980 on AppleII and his to number zero of the serie... It was a tile based first view game (like EoB or M&M back times), and incorpored a real-time battle system. In Ultima 1, in 1980, it was the system of turn-based strategy and it was tile based top view.
If you think that Square invented the wheel with RPGs, I don't think so. Richard Garriott did a much more rich and realist world, IMO. Square did very good games, and I still play them and venere them, don't misunderstand me.
I meant by originality that one with originality and a good concept can beat the battle system of Final Fantasy. I personnally found the system of Chrono Trigger a much more inventive system with really cool feature. And on the computer you can put much more options and you have more possibilities to create an original, more easy to use and better system than the final fantasy's one.
