KDE versions
I was wondering if anybody else has noticed KDE 3.1 being so much slower than 2.2?
My PII 300 system (running Debian 3.0/KDE2.2) seems to start KDE in about half the time it takes my Athlon 1GHz with KDE 3.1. Is this just 3.1 being much bigger, or is there some more sinister reason?
Oh, KDE3.1 is much more "beautiful", full of effects, transparencies, etc, that''s why it''s heavier...

Yes, it''s the added effects. Go to the control panel and turn some of them off it you''d prefer speed.
I for one noticed that KDE 3 actually loads up faster than previous versions. And since I have a *decent* system (though it''s growing ever increasingly old, it''s only 800 MhZ), I can keep all the effects on and it still runs at a decent speed.

Quake 3 is pretty beautiful, but it starts up in no time.
IMHO desktop enviroments should be more scalable. I should be able to turn off all that junk for my 380 MHz K6-2, and turn it all on when using a 1.2 GHz Athlon. Also, IMHO, desktop enviroments are too slow. I''d MUCH rather have the super redraw speed that Windows has rather than transparent menus and all that stupid stuff.
But KDE is slow. I use Gnome because it seems to be a little bit faster.

You can do that. Duh.
The following statement is true. The previous statement is false.

Haven''t noticed it. Genome and KDE seam to run the same so I generaly use KDE because it has several features that Gnome just doesn''t. Gnome does have nicer themes though but KDE has Multi Background suport wich fits my A.D.D like nature.

I had better drawing speed with kde3.1 and amd1200mhz (slackware8.1)came as a surprise to me . Kde starts slower than windows shell.
