I have Mandrake installed, and based on my experiences I would say to go for Red Hat. Mandrake is nice in many ways, but Red Hat obviously gets a lot more testing due to its larger installed user base. So with Mandrake things are not only less likely to work, and when that happens, you''ve got a much smaller group of people to help you, many of which will say "well, it works for me".
Of course, this is all different if you''re good enough to solve all your own problems, but I think someone with that level of competence wouldn''t need to ask what the better distribution is.

I like RHat over Mandrake, FreeBSD or Debian over both of those. =)

I''m currently running Mandrake 9
I think its ok for a newbie, but is probably slightly less stable and contains more bugs than Red Hat (but it scores over red hat in that it supports mp3s etc out the box)
Has n e one tryed the new Gentoo linux? (www.gentoo.org)
---------
Does it matter? Even if it does matter, does it matter that it matters?

I would say I prefer Mandrake 9.1 by far over Red Hat 9. I just don''t like the default set up of Red Hat 9 and feel much more comfortable running in Mandrake, however I personally use Gentoo linux.
SonOfNed: Versions of gentoo don''t really matter. All the version number indicates is the version of the LiveCD with which you install gentoo. The end result is the same installing with Gentoo 1.2 or Gentoo 1.4_rc4, and believe me, the end result is good

Personally out of those two i much prefered red hat, although i too use Gentoo linux , and IMO it wipes the floor with both Red hat and Mandrake

I definately prefer Mandrake to Redhat.
I rebuild the rpms for athlon-xp and i must say it''s fast and stable that way.
Gentoo is a good distro too but i like the mandrake tools.
nice community and support at www.mandrakeusers.org
