The difference between a concept paper and a design paper.
I''ve seen alot of posts here where people shoot down concepts due to the lack of full detail. Posts such as "its ok but you need to add more detail a design paper should include....." But I''m here to remind people that there is a such thing as a concept paper. Which should be produced to get the overall idea of the game down on paper. Details in this should be things such as
What is the setting? What world are you going to make, what is its general history, the story behind the game.
What type of game is it? FPS, RTS, Action, Platformer, MMO?
What do you want players to be able to do?
Do you want to include communications, what is the concept of the coms system. (not specifics, just generals)
What is the type of control system you want in the game? Joystick, Joypad, Mouse, keyboard etc.
and anything else you think would help explain the IDEA of your game to people.
The key here is you do not need to go into a lot of technical detail, you just need to explain what your game is, and how you would like it to work. The design document comes alot farther along in development before you start programming. I don''t really see concept papers going over 5 pages at most depending on how indepth into your game idea you want to go. Besides once you reach the design concept portion you''ve probably reached the point where you don''t want to post it because you don''t want anyone stealing the work.
Ideas presented here are free. They are presented for the community to use how they see fit. All I ask is just a thanks if they should be used.
