For serious? discussion of (the folly?) of escapism in games go to http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/topic.asp?topic_id=160460 [EDIT : But this thread is for more lighthearted banter ]. But, here comrades we must unite to purge the game-world of fakery. For far too long have our games perpetuated potentially destructive message. Reality does not allow us to reload games, and (in my opinion) certainly does not allow for reincarnation (PC note. Buddhists are entitled to differ on this). Games rob us of the responsibility that we must take! Let us now create a manifesto (like the Dogme film manifesto) to rid us of the lies that we portray! Rule 1. 1. No more saved games! The player cannot reload if they have made a mistake. Rule 2. 2. There will be no more reincarnation. No 'pheonix feathers' or magic potions should work. Characters that are killed or that die, are dead. [edited by - Ketchaval on June 2, 2003 12:24:48 PM] [edited by - Ketchaval on June 4, 2003 4:09:21 PM]

Games rob us of the responsibility that we must take!

Let us now create a manifesto to rid us of the lies that we portray!

Rule 1.

1. No more saved games! The player cannot reload if they have made a mistake.

Rule 2.

2. There will be no more reincarnation. No ''pheonix feathers'' or magic potions should work. Characters that are killed or that die, are dead.

And how, precisely, are you going to make reality fun?

Always without desire we must be found, If its deep mystery we would sound; But if desire always within us be, Its outer fringe is all that we shall see. - The Tao

Reality does not allow us to reload games

And for that reason, we play games to get away from reality.

It's only funny 'till someone gets hurt. And then it's just hilarious.Unless it's you.
Ah, but this (tongue in cheek- but with a point) anti-escapism manifesto, is not concerned with integrating a full "reality", but with making games whose form reflects the nature of reality (ie. no reloads etc.) AND are fun.
I played through Duck Tales 2 the other day, and guess what? I couldn''t save! And you know what? It was fun. BUT, I had more then one life.

Also, I played through Half-Life the other day, and guess what? I only had one life! And you know what? It was fun. BUT, I could save any time I wanted.

What do we learn from this? A game can be fun without the ability to save, and it can be fun without the ability to have many lifes. However, if it is a long game (not minesweeper (where you have 1 life, no save ), you should provide one of these things.

Sorry about the rambling

Back in the day, I used to argue very hard against the save-reload paradigm. Now, I don''t have time, but I''m still on the same side of the argument

Let me know when you make a game that follows those rules, so I can make sure to not buy it.

I mean, give me a break. Games rob us of the responsibility we must take? I play games to avoid responsibility.

My advise to the original poster: Go outside. Get a job or something. If you''re so desperately seeking reality, maybe you should spend more time in the real world. There''s more than enough ''reality'' out there for ya.
Reality is overrated.

Nethack.

You''ve one life, and items that save you from death are VERY rare. No reloading--It allows you to save and quit, but once you reload it nukes the save... So unless you get tricky with the save files, you can''t restore if you died or screwed up.

Very tough too. It certainly doesn''t pull any punches. You can die very easily. Very good game though-- and continues to be played and a relevant game, despite having been created two decades ago.
