Mic problem.
Problems once again, urgh...
Shure SM58 (With jacks to connect it to my mic port), Audigy soundcard.
My cheap microphone works fine when I plug it in, but when I put in the Shure, half the time it doesn''t let me record with it - I have to keep fiddling with the cable in the port and keep testing the recording. It fits in completely fine as far as I can tell.
It''s very frustrating when I want to do recording.
Any ideas how to solve this problem?
sm58 is a balanced mike, are you sure you are using the right lead?
if the balanced signals are mixed somewhere down tha line, they will cancel each other out and you get nothing. This will happen with some xlr to jack leads. especially with stereo to mono converting leads.
if you can get it to work, the sound quality will still be inferior to sending it through even a mediocre mixer or dedicated mike pre amp.
hope that helps.

Yeah, you definitely need a good mic pre to get any kind of respectable sound out of the SM58. I don''t know what you''re doing now exactly, but it sound peculiar. The SM58 is a good mic, but the pre is where it''s at. Focus on getting your mic up to line level the best way you can, and then into the audigy. Here are some good pres right off hand that have great price/performance ratio:
FMR Audio RNP
Grace 101
Any route you go, make the mic preamp your priority.

The pre-amps are the cables, right? I'm just running it through them and my soundcard otherwise.
Edit: Above is post made at midnight. Forgive me.

Oh.
I really need a bare-bones preamp. All I want to do is record my voice for some voice acting projects and that's all.
I'll ask my DJ-mixer friend Richard about it.
