If you work on a higher resolution, you will lose less details.

(because the technique works equally well on shades of grey, as long as you have something selected, the technique can be used...)
The reason I use the technique is mostly because it compensate for the lifeless feeling a clean lineout usually has (IMHO) and because I am not good enough to do it on my own (my own style is more dirty). So for me it''s a nice solution

Also, by using path (vector based) instead of bitmaps, the step from photoshop to making an animated character using Flash or something similar becomes *almost* trivial...
As for the difference between "real" media and CG, well, I couldnt agree more
