How to make combat fun

** If you pressed block at just the moment the oponent attacked it would parry the attack and leave them vulnerable for half a second (Also used in a similar way Dead or Alive I think). When this worked it always felt great as you timed the parry and then countered rather than just holding block for ages. **

I just had wonderful flashbacks of Soul-blade. That is exactly the type of combat system I want! I remember having some amazing plays in Soul blade, where me and a friend played for AGES trying to kill each other, since we would circle, then lunge, attack like crazy, block, block, wait for a gap, quickly attack back, dive back, block etc. It was this awsome fight where we just kept on blocking, finally landing a hit if timed just right. That is exactly then feel I want for this game. Now mix that in with a dynamic enviroment and I just might have a winner
Just for the record, those anonymos posts are from me. If I forget to fill in the user name field, but it just submits it anyway!

In reply to Alpha_ProgDes''s question:

First step: Download MilkShape.
Second Step: Go to http://www.designaline.co.za/3DGSUV/main.html and in the navigation window go to Tutorials > Modeling. Lots of good stuff in there that will help you out.

Might I point out that prince of persia also had the ''block at the right time and make a counterattack feature''
i didnt know 3D GS had plug-ins for milkshape.
well i have v.4.12, so i guess i''ll have to scour a little...

on topic:
if you want a good game to model/get ideas from look into Skies of Arcadia. very good game and well implemented. It came out for the Dreamcast then PS2.

as far as effects go if it''s possible you should have weather conditions affect players. like if it''s foggy both you and your enemy won''t be able to see each other, if it''s raining, then everyone is slipping around, or if it''s really sunny then they or you can be temporarily blinded/stunned and be open for an attack.

Ooh baby! These ideas rock!

Taco, I was going to mention Prince of persia aswell, as its the first game that popped into my head when reading the soullade post

Aplha_ProgDes, I would say to get Milkshape working you will need the 3DGS update patch. You can get this from http://conitec.net/a4update.htm. Scroll down Software/Updates. Note that you will need the password that came with 3DGS for this to work.
