Hi, I just wanted to know if anyone knows if the .md2 and .md3 file format is copyrighted by ID. Are you allowed to create your own .md3 model, place it in a game and sell the game or do you have to create your own model format. Thanks a lot Zeus
if your planning to do this, then email id before you commit.
I''m not too sure how legal it is.

Im pretty sure if you keep it open source and free there fine with it(I see md3/md2 editor/readers all over the web). But I would e-mail them about it.

it''s been stated repeatedly that id does not hold copyrights on it''s file formats.
you cannot, however, use any of id''s tools to create levels you intend on selling with your game.
this means that bsp, bsp2, bsp3, md2, md3, and eventually md5, will all be formats you can use in your own projects. just make your own editors

I never heard of bsp2 and bsp3, what the difference between those and plain ol'' bsp?
Ok, I know that you cannot use your editors.

Does using an md3 exporter to create the model count as one of their tools?

Milkshape, for instance, is not ID''s, so my guess is that you can create all the models you need for the $25 you have to pay for it...

their model formats really arent a problem since there are several
exporters and modelers availible. the bsp format however, is slightly
complex to compile, and i havent seen any freeware/open source
bsp compilers yet. (granted i havent really looked)

bsp2 and bsp3 are just their common names, they''re still binary
space partitions.

bsp2''s just have information specific to quake 2, and bsp3''s have
information specific to quake 3 (shaders, ect)

Does anyone have an e-mail address for one of the programmers at Id Games. I tried searching on the website but couldn''t find any.
