Hi, i am writing an rts in c++, however i am doing it somewhat differently to the way most are done. Instead of using prerendered characters, i am using 3d models on a 3d landscape. What i was wondering was, what is an acceptable frame rate for such a game? (so i can determine whether it is worthwhile) thanx, John
Worldcraft III does it.

I doubt they regret it.

I have spoken.

3D RTS games are far from uncommon, so there''s no need to worry.

Warcraft III
Earth 2150
C&C Generals
Empire Earth
Total Annihilation

That''s a few titles off the top of my head...
I think all games shoot for a 60 fps on an average machine.
What do you call an "average" machine? 60 fps is ridiculously high for a modern game. Hell, I have an Athlon 2100+ and a GeForce 4 TI 4600, and Morrowind usually runs at about 16-20 fps in the outdoor areas.

Woah thats very low (I find at least.) I usually get around 60 and I only have a geforce 4 mx 440. In big battles in wc, it does slow down a bit, but still managable.

You get around 60 fps in the outdoor scenes in Morrowind ? Good lord! Maybe it''s just my detail settings...

Warcraft III usually runs without even a stutter, BTW.
In Morrowind, shadows are possibly *the* most defining performance hit for any graphics card. Doubly so if you''ve got pixel shaders turned on as well. I could always get a general 20-25 FPS in most outdoor areas on my 1.3Tbird and GF2, it just took knowing the right detail settings.

Well, I have all my detail settings maxed out (the draw distance setting kicked my GeForce 4''s ass) at 800x600 resolution. I have the pixel shaders on and the shadows completely off.

My outdoor frame rate may suck, but the game looks so damn good I don''t care.
Man, I wouldn''t be complaining about 20-25 fps outdoors. On my comp (A AMD 700 mHtz with a SiS 64MB card) i get less than 5. the fps meter says 5, but I know it''s lower. 5 fps and no movement is totally wrong. It doesn''t usually completly stop, but when it does the fps counter still says 5. In doors I usually get 7-12, depending on how many creatures/NPCs etc. are there. But it''s an awsome game, so I tolerate the slow downs.
