After using RPG Maker 2000 for approximately 15 minutes, I fell in love with the old 2D RPG stuff. I was wondering if someone could tell me where I might find any programs to do the artwork for 2D RPGs? I''m curious, but I know someone will probably tell me, "the art is done through your own artistic abilities!" or something like that, which is probably right. The point is, I want to create my own 2D RPG without the help of RPG maker 2000. I understand there is an article here at gamedev regarding tile-based games so I''ll look into that. Is there anythins else I should read before starting a project like this? Thanks in advance! WikedGamer
Are you looking for a program to create 2d art, or for advices on how to create a 2D, tile based engine?

Many old RPGs use 16x16 sprites (FFs). I recommend using good old MSPaint for these because it easily allows you to zoom in and edit pixel by pixel.
Hi,
I have found Infinity Textures (www.i-tex.de) great for creating tiles for games. I am a programmer with very little artistic talent, and IT has allowed me to make some great tiles for my games.
