Mainly, it''s a modified version of 3d Studio Max 4, where many features have been removed. It was built for making models that you can later include in games that support it, mainly for mod makers and gamers that can''t afford the whole 3d studio.

Some of the removed features are all rendering, NURBS, importing and exporting options (you can only save into a gmax format), particles, extended primitives, and some other things.

I see it as a free trial of 3d Studio Max, and only useful if you want to make models for one of those games that support it.
