Game premise : Fighting game with a twist...
Ok, I had a great idea that I have been developing and before I go any further with it I would like input...
It is a fighting game centered around the great history of China durring 189-254 AD called "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms period" after a novel written about it that has sold more coppies then Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" (written by a prominant leader durring these times) or even the bible.
In this game you start out without a weapon in a fight. If you choose you can take different weapons off weapon racks or if it is on a battle field then from fallen soldiers around you. You could only hurt the person your fighting and it would be set in a box (like all modern fighting games) but in battle fields and such you can kill soldiers while your fighting to steal their weapons while facing opponents.
Different characters will have different unlockable "Historic Weapons" which will be their actual weapons they used. All characters will wield these with all the normal moves for the type of weapon ALONG WITH a few extra moves especially for said character.
Another change from the norm is that moves will be handled alot differently. Instead of hitting buttons and hoping you hit first, there will be only a few initiating moves and then a wide variety of blocks and counters that would be easily executed (lets say there are 4 possible counters for each move, on a Gamecube controler you could move the c-stick in any direction to innitiate a new move which can then be countered or blocked. I think that this will add for much more realism... have you ever watched a martial arts match where people just randomly hit eachother without any regaurd to reversals, blocks, or counters?
Another change would be health. Depending on the weapon used, it will take VERY LITTLE to kill you. A spear would take one quick forward thrust for a kill, a club a single wack to the head, a sword a slice anywhere on the head or chest, etc. Martial arts would probably be a 3-4 hit kill because the only real way to hit is to wait until you use a very "heavy" move, or one that takes a bit of time to recover from, block it and then hit and hope they cant counter in time. Weapons would be similar. Simple parrying, dodging, blocking, etc.
I plan on 12 characters, 3 unlockable (the 3 greatest leaders of the age, Liu Bei, Sun Quan, and Cao Cao) and an initial 9 comprised of the most well known warriors of the time.
Guan Yu
Zhang Fei
Zhao Yun
Sun Ce
Lu Meng
Gan Ning
Xiahou Dun
Xu Huang
Zhang Liao
3 characters from each of 3 sides in the epic struggle for control of china. There would be a wide variety of levels... Battlefields in different locations where you can kill soldiers of the oposing team to steal their weapons and help you fight the general you are facing, dojo type areas, throne rooms, etc. NanMan could be a fun one (elephants riding past you, if you last long enough huge firework spewing stone animals would appear on the horizon and all the animals the nanman had would run away before attacking again) lit areas with men surrounding the Generals (ala Zhang Fei and Ma Chaos' duel) and even Hu Lao Gate!
Sure most of you dont know what I am taking about but give me input on the game dynamics please, I would love to develop this idea but if everyone hates it then I wont even look into working on it.
*New dynamic weapons system
*New Moves System
*New life system (easy kills if you can get hits off)
*New story surrounding the game (atleast to fighting games)
*Balanced Weapon system
k, post again later.

You know, there is a game series about that era, with (i think) exactly or at least mostly the same characters, don''t remember what it''s called, but it is a fighting game, just thought I''d warn you
Hi, heres my feedback:
Ok, I''m not too fond of the 1 to 2 hit kills thing. I know it''s more realistic, but it there are all these complex counters and blocks in the game, I want to get a chance to learn them, and dying everytime I slip up is not really going to make me want to keep playing.
You should establish somthing like that in the difficulty settings. For instance, on a particular mode (lets say Hardcore expert fighting game players mode) you may can have that all fine and good, but for the average mode (you''ve got 10 minutes to pull me in impress me or else I''m going to toss this sucker out of the window and move on to play ''The Sims'' MODE) you could have multiple hits or if you want to be more intuitive, Armor, just so players get a chance to get in and have fun, otherwise you might discourage players.
Second thing, and this doesn''t really matter that much, but yes there are games already based on these backgrounds (Romance of the Three Kingdoms series, Bushido Blades, Dynasty Warriors, Kessen etc...)
Other than that, sounds kool, what cha gonna make it for?

I am fully aware of Koei''s RotK games. I admire and love these games. I originally had the inspiration for this game while thinking about the Dynasty Warriors series.
It sounds complicated but it wouldnt be. To pull off a basic counter it would just be a movement of the c-stick. For an advanced counter you would pull off a move similar to any fighting game combo while moving the c-stick in a certain direction. Blocks would be innitiated by 1 button but not all counters can be blocked. I simply want to create a more realistic yet surprisingly simplistic game where you can do realistic moves with your weapons and not slam on the buttons hoping to hit someone before they hit you. Virtua Fighter is a big step forward in this gaming premise but i want to take the final step and make it a fully realistic fighting simulation that you can pick up and play and still do well.
Koei is doing great work, but this would cover ground that they havnt yet in a field that they are dominant in. Please tear this idea apart and examine everything about it so i can atleast design it (if I have any support) the way people would want it...

Offtopic, but why did you feel the need to make this claim?
I meant to say in asia but was tired last night. In Asia the 2 best selling books of all time are Sun Tzus'' The art of War and The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Sorry for the mix up on not saying "In Asia."
Well, not much activity here... writing up a design document so I can clarify my ideas for myself and anyone reading this... will post back shortly... document is only about 5 pages right now but I doubt it will go past 10 considering it isnt as detailed as I plan for a real copy of the document to be... just organizing ideas...
