Why don't linux programs allow you to specify the install location?

Sorry? Did I say something wrong?

You meant installable (RPMs, SlackPacks and .deb packages are meant to be installed), not uninstallable.
But you can also uninstall an rpm. I believe that was his point.

Wrong, it does depend on how the software was coded. If all the directories the software tries to access are hardcoded, you''ll run into some errors if you try to install it in another. Although, most software these days do use autoconf so that shouldn''t be a point but there are still a couple that use hardcoded directories that I''ve run accross...

I too have encountered some programs that have hard-coded directory paths, but I believe that to be poor coding practice as noted in my original post...

Yeah, I know what you meant, but "uninstallable" sort of implies that it can''t be installed... not that it can be uninstalled...

If I had my way, I''d have all of you shot!

May I be the first to ask: What distribution are you using? and what method are you using to install your programs?

At the moment I''m using SuSE, but I have used Red Hat and Mandrake in the past.

Most software I download is just the source (no RPMs).

one of the biggest reasons I started thinking about this is because the HD that I was using for my root partition was filled up (got new HD). I wasn''t storing any data on my drive, just installed programs.
But after that I had a hard time installing anything but programs that only used files in their path. Those I could just put on my second HD.

To me it just seems natural to promt for an install location when installing an app. But it also seems natural to me to keep all files pertaining to a certain application together, so I guess I''m a wierdo.
