hey ppl, I want to test network code on a single pc. p2p connection Any tips on this.
You could make your winsock program have both client and server features. Thus, one process could be the server while the other is the client.

Otherwise, you could log onto any webserver just to test the client.

If it's p2p then you just run two instances of the program. It'd probably work better with Win2k Pro or possibly XP.

You'd be better off finding a cheap second system. You could probably get a great deal on an old P200 complete system. $70 or less would be a fair price as long as it has audio, video, at least 32MB of ram and a 1-8GB HD.

That's the exact same system I use for testing a second client except I've popped a bit more ram into it so Win2k Pro would run better on it.

$40 plus $25 shipping is a great deal.

The MB doesn't have AGP. If your app needs DX8.1 you'll need to get a PCI card that supports it. I use a Voodoo3 2000.

Or have a friend lug over their system for you to test on.

But for now running two instances of the program should do. I think you have to set them up to run on different ports though, which is a bit of an annoyance.
cheers guys I am off to try and find an old system.

I would suggest only that PC for the case and spare parts. spend 150-200 dollars get a new motherboard and a p3 for it. Then you could buy a 128 chip and nice cheap geforce2 32mb for about 50 dollars probably. It would total about 470 (including price for the inital pc) dollars for a PC that could easily be a home pc. Of course since it''s a Gateway I wouldn''t buy it but hey. I know a lot of people have small budgets or no income but if your going to buy something might as well get something that well still be a benefit to you when you progress in the quality of your work.

Walmart.com sells a PC for $200 (no OS included.) But it does have all of the components needed (video, sound, harddrive, memory, processor, keyboard, mouse, etc.)
