So the compresser was compressing 1/8 as good as you said, Then About how good Compression could it get?? Wouldnt it still be better than Winzip????

Esap1, I dont think you understand but he was losing 7/8 of whatever he compressed!

Well actually, I posted that infamous first message because thats what my compressor produced - then I found a little (!) problem in my code that meant instead of reading and writing all the bits of a byte, it was only using the first.
I didn''t really have the guts to say it went wrong like that...
I still feel really bad though.

Pretty sad how you didn''t even test your compression algorithm without a decompressor.
Yo Anonymous, No crap I understand READ WHAT I POSTED!!!, if he only was putting a bit out of every byte, his file sized would be 8 times bigger. well, in his first post, he was compressing down to .5 percent, well, .5 percent * 8 is 4%, That really friken Good, SOO, Does the algorythim itself really work?????????
For some time now, I haven''t been able to post to gamedev from my office connection, so I thought, since this thread has gone so out of topic, that this would be an excellent thread to post a test to. So don''t read this

I'm reminded of the day my daughter came in, looked over my shoulder at some Perl 4 code, and said, "What is that, swearing?" - Larry Wall
