Your Idols in game design?
Dungeon Keeper was nowhere near Molyneaux''s original vision. Even after multiple years of delay, it came out as a compromise.
As for desingers, Dani Bunten is so often overlooked, it hurts. She is responisble for three of the most amazing leaps in multiplayer gaming: M.U.L.E., Modem Wars, and Global Conquest. The rest of her work always showed innovation and *gaming* ahead of flash, novelty, and market pandering (despite being brow-beaten by EA upper management).

Sid Meier, Doug Church, David Braben, Julian Gollop (who? Google him), Tim Stellmach, Warren Spector, Richard Garriot, etc. I also admire Paul Green''s attempts to break out of genre boundaries with Realms of the Haunting and Soulbringer.
