FreeBSD Installation
Every time I attempt to install FreeBSD 4.6.2, it hangs on the hardware probe right after configuration. I''ve tried removing almost everything in configuration and removing nothing, and much in between. Everything I try has no effect.
Any Ideas?

I wish I could help, I have yet to install FreeBSD 5.0 successfully. It always hangs on boot at "Entropy Harvesting: interrupts ethernet point_to_point".
To make matters worst I can''t seem to find any info on what this is and why it''s happening.

Have you tried installing the lastest version of FreeBSD?

I''m not sure if this will have an effect, but I seem to remember a problem with the hardware probe and some onboard USB implementations. You might try disabling USB in your bios, and make sure that you don''t have the bios set for plug-and-play OS, i.e. OS is not plug-and-play.
It could also be a specific hardware issue like video card, especially if you are not loading any ethernet drivers. You might do a search on groups.google.com for any hardware you suspect might be at issue.
BTW, 4.6.2 is the latest stable release of FBSD last I checked...

Extrarius: Have you read INSTALL.TXT and/or ERRATA.TXT? They sometimes contain info on how some problems causing the kernel to hang..and ways to get around this. If you don''t have those files juct check out the links under "Current Release: 4.6.2" at freebsd.org
tortoise: I think your problem might be realted to that ACPI thing in -CURRENT. you might be able to disable it before booting the kernel. Try the FreeBSD-CURRENT mailing list

Have you compiled kernel and installed them ?
Nope, I downloaded a complete CD image from freebsd.org for installation, and I cant install the kernel that is my problem, after booting from the CD and picking some config options (just deleting which devices I dont have in the visual config), installation hangs while scanning hardware. Actual installation comes after the scan, but since my system freezes there, I am unable to install it.
I''ve read all the text files on the cd and I didnt notice anything related to freeze/hang on boot, except one I saw somewhere that was for owners of a certain device, which I do not own.

FreeBSD 4.6 install was broken for me too. I''d wait for 4.7. Or get 4.5.

Don''t remove anything from GENERAL kernel! Only if your have specific devices you need config manualy. (Like RAID)
