Game Idea
Tell me if this is a good idea or not.
The game takes place in a Prison. It will be non-linear and things will be based on your actions. You will also be able to join various gangs, buy guns and stuff from crooked cops, and kill people to get your fame up. There will be various missions from killing gang leaders which will gain you protection to creating an uprising to escaping. And for pacifists(sp?) there will be an in game option to wait out your prison term and to avoid little violence as possible. I realize the subject matter would cause pretty strong language so it will be strong but in moderation. I am not going to have prison sex and gang rapes, for obvisious reasons(might offend somepeople or other things).
So, please give me your feedback.
I for one think it''s a bad idea. I say that game designers shouldn''t fall back on violence and crime when they are short of ideas. Creativity makes a game, and if a game doesn''t have it, better change ideas. Or hobbies

I am trying to show the harshness of prison( like a public service announcement.) Violence is something that is real, this is a way to realize your decisions matter.
Why not make an in prison game where you must gather the necessary tools and recruits to make a succesful escape from prison?, even make a plan. If its non linear you could include random prisons with random NPC''s random tools in the world and escapes could never be the same and planning of your escape would be a must.
You could also include interaction with other NPC''s and the solving of some of their "quests" as if:
"The other day the 187 guy killed my brother here in prison, the guards found him bleeding in the ground but everyone else told the guards that he had fallen from the stairs. But I saw 187 throw him off the stairs. He took a very important photo of my sister he kept. It''s the only one we have of her and she''s the only family member we got. If you would be so kind to get it back I could help you out with your plans of escaping from prison."
And stuff like that. You could write hundreds of stories and see that they''re not repeated until all of them have been used and passed.
Of course you would be able to choose if you want to make a quest or not. It all depends on what you think you need.
You could also have several rankings in each "generated mission" which could be then saved and redone if the player liked it and wants to complete it with a higher rank or points.
You maybe can not open many doors with this type of setting but they are sure playable and enjoyable. You could also display some type of violence to show that it IS a prison, but generally that kind of behaviour inside one is only done by a few if not by one. In this case the 187 guy...

Roof Top Pew Wee: I do agree with you, although this doesn''t apply to all games, GTA3 and Serious Sam for example.
I think that would be a great idea. It''s new and different. I can honestly say I''ve never played a game in that sistuation before. The only flaw I could see with it is if the game environment was too small, or if the game lacked variety due to the limited environment(similar quests and such). I think the idea has a lot of potential though. I''d play it.

But they no longer matter once you''re in prison, right? There are no longer repercussions other than your "rep", or perhaps being killed?
I am the only one who sees an inherent contradiction here?

And what will you do then? Weave f*cking baskets?

Oh, no prison sex or gang rapes, but killing, mobbing, selling drugs, etc are perfectly okay?
Get your shit straight. Prison is not fun, and is the largest indicator of our lack of civilization. Prisons should be restricted to the unrepentant, the repeat offender; juveniles, first-timers, problem youth all need rehabilitation, not incarceration, and an entertainment title that exploits the negatives of the prison experience as a source of gameplay and fun is in very poor taste, IMO.
Have you ever seen a prison comedy? The only one I''ve ever seen was Life with Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence, and it was funny because it wasn''t a maximum security prison and there wasn''t killing and pillaging and raping. Oz is heavy stuff.
If you want to keep it gritty and emotionally taut, then go read and watch The Shawshank Redemption (again, and again if you already have). Incarcerated for a crime you didn''t commit, focus on educating the individuals around you, building and strengthening ties, leveraging relationships to obtain the scarce commodities you desire - all the while planning your escape masterpiece...
The only other way to redeem this title is to model it solely on the single most entertaining/inspiring prison-related activity: the escape. From dungeon crawl to farcical comedy, this has proven to be the only sure-fire form of widely palatable prison entertainment. Wolfenstein 3D was essentially a prison escape in the early levels. O Brother, Where Art Thou is a prison escape. Even Life had a bunch of botched escape attempts to lighten the mood.
I think I''ve said enough.
Im not going to shoot down your idea because Im sure youve got a good vision of the game. I wouldnt listen to what alot of the people here say, because think older games that were developed and what people thought about them before they were being developed look at final fantasy, some guy was like "hey lets make a game were you walk around talk to people do different missions and when you fight your people line up and swing a sword and hurt each other by not touching them. If you listen to that the idea is sh*t I say work on your idea and think about it. If someone brings up an question about it think about it and try to fill in the hole. This is your game not their game. That is what is wrong with game developers they develop games that they think people will like, I say just make games there are always going to be people who find your game enjoyable because there are so many different type of people. When you make games that you think people will like you come out with retarded games. Your idea is original and sounds fun stick with it and make it and when you make the game you will be one step above everyone else here who has never made a game and just sits here and dogs on other peoples ideas.

Well, now that I''m at it, might as well anger a few more people. Since it was brough up, GTA is a horrible excuse for a game. I think it has absolutely NO creativity in it. It''s just a simulation, not a creative game. Sorry all.

I don''t see why a simulation can''t be creative, and last time I checked GTA3 wasn''t exactly a realistic simulation of anything. What kind of games do you consider creative?
