Hey there all. I have been doing some practicing lately with basic low poly 3d models. Idealy, I want to major in Real time cinematography when i attend school this coming spring. Although it is not required for me to be fluent in any 3d software, I have wanted to have at least a grounding in the basics before i start school. So here they are. This is the radeon 8500 i baught nearly 5 months ago. This actully looks like mine too as i have recently added a blue orb fan to it, so perhaps rendering this using a blue heatsink would be more appropriete. Remember, I pulled this out of my arse months ago. It is modeled using a Background image, the texture and a simple box extrusion method. The fan was a little more in depth, but it weighs in a little less than 1000 poly. I just pulled this out of the air this morning. I was bored and needed somthing to do. i have had case and colling mod design ideas for a long time thanks to my buying the via c3 to operate as a completly passive server. So i designed this Radeon fan for 8500 and 9700 chipsets. My method here was a little more complex than the last one and its all modular. but i think it works well. I had to make the radeon logo on the top, which in this rendering is hardly visible, butit adds a nice little realism to it. The fan is a design similar to thermal take with the volcano 3 and irl would measure 80 mm. this makes this a large gpu fan. Lastly, I applied the Redmedia Logo to the fan as a little personal touch. Anyone got suggestions.? I need to learn more and befor ei start school, I want to learn how to model organics like characters and foliage. The other thing i have issues with is texturing. I would like to have a grounding in this before i get too deep into geometry. Im also poor, so anything read, will have to be online unfortunately. I have to replace this R8500 cause i found out its a LE, which accounts for its crap performence on my pIII and my friends athy. Very, very good.
When you say, "I have been doing some practicing lately with basic low poly 3d models." do you mean you are new to 3D? If so, WOW. Those are superb models, especially the Radeon fan.
I Can''t give you any crits, seeing that I havn''t looked at these cards paticularly.
I look forward to seeing more of your models.

PS. Which modeling software did you use?

I would not say im new to 3d. im just lazy in it. I have been PLAYING with 3d for a few years ago using bryce.

Currently, I do all my models in milkshape 3d and use bryce 4 as a rendering engine. it works pretty well. I still suck at texture making though :
I have done lots of neat things in bryce though. Most of these came from several years ago.

Renders from ages past

The discovery of ms3d

Early last year i discovered a nice little cheap ass modeling program called milkshape 3d. This program has become my tool for making more complex models that bryce could not, or would make very difficult.

I have experimented with some complex inorganic shapes as well as the odd living thing.

with more practice using ms3d and some light photoshop edits, I can achieve some neat looking stuff using the bryce render engine.

So, how bad do i suck people? I know i have a long way to go, but i need some criticism.

Very good,
I believe that if you are serious about doing 3D, I would get off my bum and PRACTICE. For organic stuff, usually you will smotth the object much more than mechanical (subdivide faces, don''t know the Bryce term.)

In ms3d it is subdivision, but I dont usually bother as it makes the surface inproper. I want to learn the features of ra 9700 such as displacment mapping and the uses of pixel shaders with renderman. Im still new, but when ithink of a project i get lost on where to start with it, I think i might try to model my cell phone next.
FOr those of you that know me, you know that 3d is not my forte. I spend more time with cell shading in photoshop.

but i want to be able to do this in 3d to ease the animation process.Additionally, I want to do it in real time using true form and many other features supported under the radeon.
