Where can I run the server?
I have written server for my 3d game, but since I am behind the firewall , I can''t run it on my computer (nobody would be able to connect to it).Is there some place on the internet where I can run it? There are sites which allow you to put your homepage there, maybe there sites which allow to run server? Any ideas???
hmm.. What about asking a friend who has a good DSL connection ?
Darkhaven Beta-test stage coming soon.
if your server runs on linux (like any good server will) a shell host may allow you if you talk nicely (or for a price)
Hmmmm... Why does some people think that Linux is "better" than the latest windows OS to run a server ?
Besides all flame wars, I'd like to know if there's any truth beyond that (objective people please...

I''ve found Windows 2000 Professional to be great for running a server. Despite the hype, Linux is nothing special when it comes to running things. Portability is over rated. It''s better to optimize for a target system otherwise you end up with unncessary overhead.
To answer the question, you''re just going to have to make friends with someone who isn''t behind a firewall. Slap a PC on their LAN that can run your server and let it go.
Running a server is a full time job so it''s best to just run it where you can see it. You should be able to configure your firewall to open up the port your app uses. Or find an open port and set your app to use it.

Yikes, don''t do this... If you do have a friend who is connected 24/7 and doesn''t have a firewall, you might suggest that he protect himself better. This is a huge liability.

This is a much better idea. Yes, do this... no reason to hide your work from the outside world, just run it in a semi-protected environment.

Yep, it''s a holy war, you won''t get objectivity in any forum on this one. My advice is know both, support both. If your project is for fun, Win2K is perfectly fine. I must say though, unless you are stealing Win2K, it''s quite a bit more expensive than Linux...
Probably could start a new thread on this one... but it''s been done many times here already.
Good luck.
I am behind the firewall that I can''t control. The firewall is at the entrance to our network.I can start connection from here outside but you can''t connect from outside in here.

Since when did Windows 2000 get demoted from a professional platform for professional server solutions?
You complain about using words like "right" and "wrong" yet seem to feel it''s okay to demean projects simply because they choose one OS over another.
Windows 2000 works as well as Linux for a professional solution. It''s just more expensive which I don''t have a problem with. I think MS deserves the $200 for Windows 2000. It''s a great product.
My server app will work on Linux if I cared to compile it for that platform but I have no desire or reason to use Linux.
