The older I get, the less I care about what other people think.

I have one short, limited life. Who can tell me how I''m supposed to spend it? Who has the moral authority to dictate to me what I should be doing with the small amount of free time my life affords? Is there some goal, or destination, that I''m supposed to be striving for?

Which is better, to live a life that''s boring but respected, or to live a life you enjoy regardless of opinion?

LOL! Sorry, got a bit philosophical there. But conformity really annoys the hell out of me. Anyways...

Ok, heres my 2 cents. I''m not a geek, nerd or anything like that, yet most of my time is spent on the computer or at school. I have friends who are girls and even a really hot girlfriend, and even though I usually don''t tell people I''m a programmer and spent alot of time on the computer, but all of the people I have told (including popular people, hot girls etc.) have said it doesn''t matter if you spend alot of time on the computer trying to figure out something complicated that most people have no idea about, it''s how you act and let people perceve yourself. I''m a big guy (football player, about 6''2 and 215 lbs.) and most of the people I''ve told are like "dude, are you serious?!" and couldn''t believe that I was a programmer and stuff, thats because most people have the 80''s sterotypical image of a programmer (small, weak, peocket protector). Me and my friend were talking about this, and we decided Bill Gates should be bitch slapped. Thats right, he should be bitch slapped right in the mouth. He''s a weak geeky programmer in the public''s eye, and they perceive all programmers to be simmilar to him. So join me in the Bitch Slap Bill Gates foundation!!

(if I never get heard from again it''s because Bill Gates hired some hit men and whacked me lol

Isn''t it also the platform? A lot of people know very little about PC''s so when they see someone that can use one and they know they can actually program it they think.. wow.. geek. It seems that people with a level of intelligence slightly higher than your normal joe is branded a geek. Scientists, Mathmaticians (sorry.. thats one of those words I really don''t know how to spell correctly..) etc, they all get tarred with that. I think that Sony are doing the best to make gaming cool. Look at the Playstation, that got put into clubs and became a cool thing to sit down and chill out on.
Thats my idea anyway...

If things seem bad, think that they can get a whole load worse, and they don''t seem so bad anymore

yeah you''re so right...there''s just no point in caring what others think...it does absolutely no good ( I should know. I care way too much myself )

Let me put some of my thoughts here, things get hot
Anyways, I think for most people, computers and video games are two separate things. For us, those are two inseparable objects . Keep in mind that a computer geek does not necessarily mean a gamer. And a gamer does not necesarrily mean a game programmer. I have some friends who understand computers, play games a lot, but they don''t like making games.

Games are considered childish. Most people don''t play video games once they become a (young) adult, unless they''re specially talented to make the games themselves . We all know playing games consumes most of our time, like 5 hours/day or somewhere around that. They (non-gamers) do not like wasting their time doing a useless thing like that, they prefer in other things that have higher priority rate for them. We, the gamers and the makers, consider that playing and making games are our priority, that''s why we make and play them a lot. Some educated adults think it''s ok and perfectly normal. They say it''s cool (IT IS!), it''s wonderful and so forth. Basically, they understand us. These people are mostly they who understand computers. Some others not, they still think games == child == useless.

I have to say im disappointed in this forum. who cares about labels like geek or nerd. If you really like games more than those other people, then they shouldnt matter that much. But, if you like them better, then why do you spend more time on games? Its simple logic which everyone here should understand. Make up your own priorities and dont try to impress people who dont even have anything in common with you.
Hard to buy, coming from an AP..
