The RTS I was looking for?
Airborne Assault: Red Devils Over Arnhem
From the webpage and a review I saw on Gamespy, this game looks to include almost every feature I have been writing about for the last year in this forum. Has anyone else heard of this game or be willing to try it?
Most of its features will be very different to those weaned on the typical RTS mold, as it's really a wargame....but it is an RTS on the operational level.
I'd like to hear any comments from anyone who has played the game so I can get some feedback on the gameplay design and features. I'd also like to hear from anyone who would be interested in a game like that.

The world has achieved brilliance without wisdom, power without conscience. Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants. We know more about war than we know about peace, more about killing than we know about living. We have grasped the mystery of the atom and rejected the Sermon on the Mount." - General Omar Bradley
That looks wicked!
I''m far from an RTS man myself, but I have to say, I''m impressed...
On a side note: Dauntless I usually read your posts on Strategy related stuff, and you scare me. In the same way that that game scares me.

Question: How do they store/render the terrain in that game? It is not tiled (hex or squares) - it looks more like a 2D polygonal map. A while back I was thinking of implementing the very same kind of map in a global strategy game, but I couldn''t find much information on making such maps. Does anyone have any ideas?

uhhh, is that a good thing or bad thing that I scare you? I just take a different tack to game design than most I think. I look deeper than just game play and game features, and get right down to the very foundation of what people look for and want. Blame it on my psychology studies, hehe. Read the bio on the guys that developed the game, and they sound a lot like me.
doctorsixstring-
good question. I downloaded a little demo for the Radeon8500 called Meshuggah, and there's a feature in there called "infinite tile". The demo shows a fractal image, and the "camera" keeps zooming in slowly for about 20 seconds and the fractal just keeps getting more and more detailed. It was a pretty cool effect. I have no idea how they did it though. A question for the Game Programming column I think, but a good feature for Game Design

It says on the site that they''re using a vector-based image for the map.
vector based? Like used in CSVG graphics? Like I said, more of a programming question, but it''s game design uses should be obvious in comparison to other 2d methodologies.
I downloaded the demo, and so far it seems pretty cool to me. I think most will complain about the ugly graphics, but honestly, if the game play is cool...more power to battlefront. BUT, I do wish they had some snazzy 3d engine in there

no prob Symphonic I''m sure a lot of people who read my posts think I''m on crack or something, but oh well....I''m sorta like that strange spice that no one knows what it really tastes like until you use it.
As for the game, I played the demo but I keep losing the tutorials because it''s time limited. So I haven''t really gotten a good feel for it, but I love how they integrated everything.
