Le fabuleux destin d'Amelie Poulain
A thoroughly enjoyable film, in which all characters are described by a rapid enumeration of little things they like or dislike. Bouncing rocks off the surface of the water, the touch of hard leather, strawberries, glass balls, tin soldiers, the sound of a dime settling on a table, the sound of a tree in the wind, a colored dwarf statue in red clothes with a pointy red hat, cutting a steamy roasted chicken, the sound when you pull a rubber cap of a bottle etc. etc., all cause instant reactions in the viewer.
So, the purpose of this thread is to make a list of all the little things that make something tick inside as soon as you see/hear them. Everything cute, tasty, painful, scary, yucky. Kitty, syringe, that high pitch at the dentist, blueberry pie, squeezing a half-lemon, cockroach, meow, list them all.
Why? Isn''t it obvious? Remember the blue balloons and the red and white umbrellas in Roller Coaster Tycoon? The dead men breathing in the dark in Thief? That''s why.
Not exactly an easy one, mainly because I think part of the thing about those little things is that part of the fact they are pleasant is that you kinda forget about them when they are not there, and the surprise of "rediscovery" is what make them so pleasant (I think).
I''ll give it a try though :
that special metallic taste when you kiss someone (I think it''s the blood...)
the smell you get after the rain in summer on a hot road.
the texture of objects, in general, I just love to feel the texture.
the endless patterns of the flame in the chimney.
that buzz I get through my whole body when the music has a lot of good bass in it, I just like that physical feeling, a bit like the wind was blowing on me.
there, one for each senses, I am sure there are tons more
I can see some problems in trying to put this kind of stimuli in a game though
ps. Nice to see you know about Amelie Poulain, did you see it in English or did it get translated to romanian ? (I must say I was really glad the english version wasnt dubbed, this would have been a loss)
Sancte Isidore ora pro nobis !

Hey, the movie was a hit, and not only in Romania. For instance it’s the 12th best movie ever in the imdb.com top. Thankfully, we get no dubbing for any movies, TV or silver screen. I can even enjoy Cartoon Network with the original voices. Even so, I’m aggravated enough at the poor translations movie titles get (bah, translating “The Phantom Menace” with something like “The Ghost’s Threat”)
Loved the movie. Everything was made to fit the "mood" : music, colours, presentation, characters, acting. Definitely the movie of the year, for me.
Diodor, I really like your ideea. I can easily see these kind of short cutscenes, or flashes, used to add to the story. Visual/aural symbols, if you will.

LOL yeah, I am pretty sure. They didnt call it French kissing for nothing
Oh diodor ! I thought of another one of my favourite :
when I am in a noisy area, like a canteen, or somewhere with lots of background noise that mix into a sort of aural jam... I like to try and find the matching tone, so I hum to myself until I find the tone that matches the outside. And at that instant, it''s like I am physically part of the flow of noise, the vibration of my voice humming and the vibration of the environment melt into a weird feeling... very hard to describe if you have never done it, I suppose that''s why I love it so much
