Game Development for X-Box
how many of you folks out there would be interested in doing something for the x-box? there would be some serious money in it, i would think. based upon the hardware specs of it, programmers should have a field day with it.
just curious what everybody thinks

Well, what I''m hoping is that since the X-Box will run on an x86 chip, VC++ 7 will let you develop stuff for it out of the box. That would really be cool
Plus, it would probably dramatically increase the base of developers, although Microsoft wouldn''t be able to get so much money for licensing fees. But how much more $$ does MS really need?

Yah, basically the x-box is gonna be an ordinary computer with a large, low resolution monitor (the TV). But the x-box wont be released for year and half, and by then, the 600Mhz chip wont be that powerfull. And what your gonna see is alot of the current games being ported to it. Quake 4 and any other game you expect to be released for the computer in a yr from now will also be ported right to it. But otherwise, you will probably be able to expect some pretty good games for it because of the easier delevopement and anyone that can make a simple game should be able to make a game for it
Possibility

by that time, I ( hopefully ) will have a fair ammount of experience with direct x programming, and would like to get a job making games. think of all the money you could make.
even if not for the x-box, but something like the ps2. those things are going to be rather common ( or so says the articles on gamedev :p which seems reasonable )

Microsoft has said that the X-Box will use standard console-type licensing system, which will mean that not just anyone can go and release a game for it. You will need Microsoft''s permission, as they will control what games are distributed for the system (just like Sega, Sony and Nintendo do now).
Getting a full X-Box developer kit (which pros would need -- though the X-Box is "like" a PC, there are several significant differences in the architecture) will probably
cost $10k or more.
Hopefully, Microsoft will also offer a Yaroze-like hobbiest version for tinkering and learning.
