I've been looking into buying a new(er) car recently, and I started getting this funny feeling -- I felt incredibly guilty about it. Me and my car have grown rather close over the years. I felt like I was abandoning a faithful old friend. Never mind that my old friend likes to not start at inopportune times and has no paint left on top (she's bald :( ). I still felt like a dick about it.

It's pretty easy to become emotionally attached to things. It doesn't really matter how much you try to reason with yourself about it, because your emotions aren't reasonable.

I can't help but wonder in games how often we force the player to throw away things they've grown attached to. I remember playing Oblivion, I created a badass enchanted sword. I think I named it THE AGROCRAG. Me and craggy were an unstoppable force. We became an inseparable team. I started to think of it as part of me. But I ended up having to throw it away after I had gained a few levels and it was turning into dead weight. Sure, I got much nicer swords after that, but I always kinda missed it.

Well, getting an improvement over the Intrepid is probably good for you. It's what the Intrepid would want, if it could talk to you.

It would rather die in a fire than become a burden to you.

Heh, I too just recently had a moment similar to yours. My watch died Sunday morning. Considering it was running on 6 years on the original battery, I knew it was coming. I was thinking about getting a new watch, as this one is getting a bit ragged looking (that, and I'm on watch band number 4, and it's starting to go), but I just couldn't let it go. I managed to get a battery for it, and its working again.

It is strange how we can become attached to things like that.
