It's pretty easy to become emotionally attached to things. It doesn't really matter how much you try to reason with yourself about it, because your emotions aren't reasonable.
I can't help but wonder in games how often we force the player to throw away things they've grown attached to. I remember playing Oblivion, I created a badass enchanted sword. I think I named it THE AGROCRAG. Me and craggy were an unstoppable force. We became an inseparable team. I started to think of it as part of me. But I ended up having to throw it away after I had gained a few levels and it was turning into dead weight. Sure, I got much nicer swords after that, but I always kinda missed it.
It would rather die in a fire than become a burden to you.
